Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
This region includes the British Isles, the Atlantic coastlines of the Netherlands, France, Spain and Portugal, and south to the Canary islands. The UK offers tradition, history, pomp and ceremony, the rugged coastline of Scotland, and a pint in an Irish Pub! Visit French villages, the wine districts, and chateaux. Sunny Spain and Portugal beckon with monuments, museums and remnants of Moorish Iberia. In Summer cruises either circumnavigate the British Isles, or visit a series of coastal towns of Western Europe. The Canary Islands are visited from Mediterranean ports also.
All the major and smaller lines visit this region. Choose your destination for either a ‘British experience’ or the Continent – France, Portugal and Spain. Cruises are port-intensive, and most sail in the northern summer. This region can be included in a trans-Atlantic voyage in either direction, or in conjunction with some ports in the Mediterranean or Azores. Southampton is one of the busiest departure ports.
Send your loved one on a Mother’s Day Voyage with Azamara Journey around the Continental shores and UK in May 2012! Celebrity Eclipse departs Miami for the Iberian coast and Southampton in April 2012 (13 nights) for a next-to-nothing fare! A number of vessels circle the UK over 10 to 12 nights, out of London, Dover and Southampton. In May and September vessels reposition between the Mediterranean and the Baltic, calling at ports on the Continental Atlantic coast and in the UK. In June 2012 the explorer ship Prinsendam offers a delightful 14-night cruise ex Amsterdam to the wine regions of France (overnight at Bordeaux), then Spain, and a round trip to Ireland, the UK and Guernsey. For a luxury 12-nights and 10-ports cruise around the UK, consider Oceania’s Marina in June or Nautica in July 2012.

Featured Europe - Western & British Isles Cruise Ports
| Cruises from Southampton Southampton, UK, is a city and major port situated on the south coast of England, and is widely recognised as the capital of the country’s cruise industry. Each year more and more cruise liners take advantage of its superb cruise terminals. It is, of course, a gateway to Europe’s largest city, the enormous cosmopolitan city of London, with all the cultural and gastronomic attractions you'd expect from a world capital. Needless to say there are a variety of well-priced means to travel to London as well as some truly amazing tours on offer. However, be aware that the city of Southampton itself is a delight to explore. |
| Cruises from Le Havre Le Havre is a city in the NW of France, situated on the right bank of the mouth of the Seine River and 170 km from Paris. Best known for being the ferry terminal for the English Channel crossings, it should not be quickly dismissed. This city was devastated during WWII, but was rebuilt in modernist style and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The innovative use of concrete, blended with the sheer sense of space, with the sea visible at the end of almost every street and open public space and expanses of water at every turn, it can be exhilarating. |
| Cruises from Hamburg Hamburg is a major transport hub in Northern Germany and is one of the most affluent cities in Europe. Located on the river Elbe, some 110 km from its mouth in the North Sea, the port can take the world’s largest cruise ships. The birthplace of Johannes Brahms, who spent his early formative years in the city, it is renowned for its numerous musicals, operas and orchestral presentations. The many streams, rivers and canals in Hamburg are crossed by over 2300 bridges, more than Amsterdam or Venice. Hamburg has more bridges inside its city limits than any other city in the world. Many visitors take a canal boat tour that presents a fascinating view of the city. |
| Cruises from Amsterdam Originally a dam in the river Amstel, Amsterdam today is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, as engineered dams, sea gates, and the 19-mile dyke walling out the Zuider Zee prevent this low-lying country from being reclaimed by the North Sea. Interestingly, the 17th century canals of Amsterdam located in the heart of the city have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The main tourist attractions are undoubtedly the famous Museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum. However, there is much more to be seen and appreciated. |
| Cruises from Rotterdam Rotterdam - located at the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta on the North Sea - is the largest port in Europe, and a perfect starting point for excursions to the cities of Holland. Few cities rebounded as quickly as Rotterdam following the Nazi invasion, which levelled the medieval heart of town, burning most of it to the ground. Today some of Europe's most bold contemporary architecture, such as the unique Cube Houses, can be found amid classic 18th and 19th C buildings in this, the greatest comeback city in the world. The city also houses the 186 m tall Euromast that has long been a major tourist attraction. |
| Cruises from Lisbon Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, lies in the western Iberian Peninsula aside the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River. As one of the oldest cities in the world, it is rich in Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Modern and Post-Modern constructions. The city is also crossed by historical boulevards and monuments along the main thoroughfares. The Lisbon Coast hosts some fine sandy beaches at Cascais and Estoril and fishing villages like Sesimbra. With a little travelling, visitors often visit Sintra to appreciate the stunning views from Europe’s westernmost point, and to explore its royal palaces and the country’s best kept secrets, the historic villages. |
