Windstar Cruises, headquartered in Seattle, operates a fleet of six high class small cruise ships that carry 148 to 312 passengers. Three of the ships named ‘Wind’ are motor-sailing yachts, with four/five masts and computer-controlled sails. Hydraulic ballast systems prevent the yachts rolling more than 6 degrees, and sails power the yachts around half the time. From 2014 three ‘Star’ ships transferred from Seabourn Cruise Line, each holding 212 passengers and meriting four stars out of five. The three ships will be lengthened to add 50 suites to each, by late 2020. Also, the ships’ engines will be renewed for faster and more environmentally friendly cruising. Each of the six vessels follow a year-round itinerary, to Tahiti, Caribbean-Mediterranean, North Atlantic-Mediterranean, and Alaska-East Asia.

Itineraries include off-the-beaten-track ports, hidden harbours and coves, attracting the locals’ attention when they berth in 270 ports across 50 countries. Windstar returned to Tahiti in 2014. Imagine the on-deck experience sailing these blue waters beneath the silent sails above. The ships carry a variety of water sports equipment launched from retractable marinas. Its strengths lie in the onboard ambiance and onshore immersion into local cultures, and naturally the cuisine reflects local recipes and produce. Gratuities are additional. Onboard style is smart but casual and unregimented, with amiable Indonesian and Filipino crew members. Guests value the intimate yacht-style cruising. Windstar’s recent awards include: 2018, Conde Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards Gold List; 2019, Windstar was named the Best Small Ship Cruise Line by AFAR readers and Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards.
