Port Vila, also known as “Vila”, is the capital and the main hub of Vanuatu. Port Vila is located on the island of Efate. There are over 100 indigenous languages spoken in Vanuatu however Port Vila’s main language is Bislama. English and French are also loosely spoken. Situated on Vila Bay, Port Vila is a busy and compact area with plenty of local markets, waterfront cafes and french influenced restaurants. Downtown Vila is the place to go to experience the National Museum of Vanuatu inside the Vanuatu Cultural Centre or take a day trip to visit the beautiful lagoons and nearby islands of Iririki and Erakor. Hideaway Island is also home to the Hideaway Island Marine Reserve where you can snorkel and dive the beautiful coral reef. Due to Vanuatu’s tropical climate, Port Vila’s temperatures are warm all year round, averaging in the high 20’s with the occasional rainstorm. Port Vila has one cruise port located on the southwest side of the island. There are local markets located just outside of the port and downtown is only a couple of minutes away.
