Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
The Mediterranean (Middle of the Earth) enabled trade for the Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs – to name a few – since the start of history. Museums on its shores display recovered sea relics from these ancient civilisations. Its ports are gateways to the treasures of Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Rome. Call at modern resorts on the Cote d'Azur, the Principality of Monaco, and islands of France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey and Malta. Some of the key ports are Barcelona, Civitavecchia (Rome), Venice, Athens and Istanbul. Cruises broadly group as Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Holy Land (Palestine/Egypt). Where will you visit first? Ancient Rome and the Vatican, the Acropolis of Athens, the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, unearthed civilisations of Turkey, or Egyptian megaliths? Well, just plan for a second and third cruise.
All the major cruise lines and small ships visit this region. Cruises sail from the UK, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Oslo and Bergen. Generally cruises visit either the Baltic Sea states or the North Sea fjord coastline. The latter usually spend 7 nights around the sub-Arctic fjord coast of Norway. Longer cruises reach further north to the Arctic regions of Norway and/or include Iceland. If visiting St Petersburg look for an itinerary that gives you one or two nights’ stay to allow for worthwhile on-shore tours.
Select the vessel that suits you - mid-size premium/luxury, or a large ship up to the size of Queen Mary 2. You will also consider which cruise offers the on-shore tours that appeal personally. In May 2014 Rotterdam offers a great 28-night cruise out of its namesake port, to North Cape above the Arctic Circle, then east in the Baltic to St Petersburg. This cruise takes you to all the significant ports of northern Europe, for the best of the scenery and best of heritage Europe. Eurodam’s 24-night repositioning cruise from Rome to Copenhagen will take you from Spain to the best of the Baltic. All the smaller luxury ships of Azamara, Crystal, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn and Silversea sail this region regularly.

Featured Europe - Mediterranean Cruise Ports
| Cruises from Marseille Located on the SE coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, Marseille is France's largest commercial port, and is also the largest French city on the Mediterranean coast. It serves as a gateway to the lush fertile region of Provence and all its cultural contributions to gastronomic excellence, impressionistic art, and ancient architecture. This cosmopolitan city with 300 days of sunshine a year, clear blue skies and the down-to-earth warmth of its residents, boasts a trading history that goes back more than 2,500 years. It is renowned for its beaches, a wide range of water sports, and particularly teaching scuba diving. |
| Cruises from Athens Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, is also one of the world's oldest cities with an unparalleled history that spans around 3,400 years. Experiencing long periods of sunshine throughout the year, and known as "the cradle of Western civilisation", it is a 'must-see' destination for world travellers. The city contains a fascinating variety of different architectural styles, ranging from Greco-Roman through Neo-Classical, to Modern. They are usually all found together in the same areas, as a walk through the old neighbourhoods of the famous historic triangle will reveal. All this together with fancy restaurants and traditional taverns ensure a delightful visit. Watch the changing of the guard at the Parliament Building! |
| Cruises from Genoa Genoa is an important seaport in northern Italy. It is also known as 'the Superb One' due to its illustrious past. Today it rises from the sea, with two massive towers providing striking landmarks. It is a real mix of the old and the new with many grand palaces and modest houses with pastel-coloured terracotta-roofs next to each other. Add to this, numerous churches with a variety of architectural styles, lovely seaside villas, several luxurious boutiques, and streets filled with vendors and buyers, and one can understand why it is said: ‘Colourful, noisy and busy, that's Genoa’. |
| Cruises from Rome (Civitavecchia) Rome, the capital, and largest city of Italy, is full of unending possibilities. It can be reached from the port of Civitavecchia in approximately ninety minutes either by train or coach. Rome greets visitors with a multitude of faces, such as the Ancient City with ruins like: the Colosseum; the seven hills; the Roman Forum; and the Sacred Way, the path used for triumphal processions. There is Renaissance Rome, full of winding streets and sun-dappled piazzas, and the Vatican, home to the Pope. Also popular are the Sistine Chapel with Michaelangelo's famous Creation of Adam fresco, and his masterpiece, La Pieta, at St. Peter's Cathedral. |
| Cruises from Venice Located at the head of the Adriatic Sea between the mouths of the Piave and Po Rivers, an intricate web of 118 tiny islands and canals make up the enchanting city of Venice in Italy. Considered to be an extremely beautiful and romantic destination, it is not surprising that Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music. One must take a gondola ride along some of the over 150 canals, including the Grand Canal. Be amazed at the numerous bridges – such as the Rialto bridge – and absorb the glorious renaissance architecture with its panorama of superbly detailed facades. Plans to restrict large ship movements in the Canal past St Mark’s Square have been scrapped. |
| Cruises from Barcelona Barcelona, located in Catalonia Spain, is Europe's largest metropolis on the Mediterranean coast, and one of the world’s major global cities. Today, Barcelona balances itself on the cutting edge of architecture, intellectual life, and style. Indeed Barcelona won the 1999 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for its architecture, the first time that the winner has been a city, and not an individual architect. The ‘Gothic Quarter’ is the centre of the old city of Barcelona, where many of the buildings date as far back as the Roman settlement. The Art Nouveau architectural style has a great number of buildings listed as World Heritage Sites. |
