The Pacific coastline of South America introduces travellers to tropical Columbia, ancient Incan civilisations of Ecuador, Peru and Chile, and the glacial coast of Patagonia. Ushuaia near Cape Horn is the cruise port for Antarctica. Along the Atlantic coast view the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain and the famed beach of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, and the "Paris of the South", Buenos Aires. Cruise ships visit many ports along Brazil’s 7500 km coastline. Vessels up to 38 000 GT venture 1450 km inland on the mighty Amazon to the cosmopolitan city of Manaus (and on-shore land trips to the surrounding jungle). Cruise/explore the Galapagos Islands, reached by air from Ecuador. South America is an explorer’s treasure chest.
Large and mid-size ships of most cruise lines visit South America in the southern summer. Itineraries can be grouped as Pacific/Incan coast, “round the horn”, Brazilian Riviera, Amazon River, Galapagos Islands, and isolated Easter Island. Long cruises effectively circumnavigate the continent. For classy yet economical travel try Celebrity Infinity, Zaandam or one of the Princess ships. Premium/luxury mid-size vessels in the area are Azamara, Silversea, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas and HAL’s Prinsendam.
Celebrity Xpedition, La Pinta and Santa Cruz exploration of the Galapagos Islands year round. Expedition ship National Geographic Orion, Seabourn Quest and Silver Explorer spend four or five nights on the Antarctic Peninsula, your best chance of crossing the Antarctic Circle and putting an explorer foot on Antarctica in luxury. Amazon cruises are offered December/January each year by at least six ships. Take your pick of the many large cruise ships that offer back-and-forth cruises ‘round the Horn’, one of the great cruise itineraries of the world. From November to March a number of MSC ships and Splendour of the Seas sail the “Brazilian Riviera”. If you want ALL of South America, Prinsendam’s Grand Cruise (68 nights) sets off from Florida in January 2014. Begin and end in San Diego with Statendam’s trip to the Incan coast in March 2014. Offering pure luxury, Seven Seas Marina spends the southern summer in South American waters.

| Cruises from Isla Baltra Isla Baltra is a small island in the Galapagos Archipelago of Ecuador. It is used by the Ecuadorian government as a military base, as well as by tourists. On boat trips look out for dolphins, whales and sharks, while accompanied by playful sea lions. Most tourism is concentrated along the waterfront where there is a range of restaurants and stores. Many even try some scuba diving, but being home to the Galapagos National Park, the Darwin Foundation and the Charles Darwin Research Station, there is much more to investigate. Upon your arrival you will have to pay US$ 100 as national park fees. |
| Cruises from Buenos Aires Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, located on the eastern shore of the Rio de la Plata, on the SE coast of South America. The birthplace of the tango, the city is as bustling with energy as the dance itself. Stroll neighbourhoods with romantic restaurants, past its architecture and parks. The 20-lane main boulevard is the longest in the world, fashioned after the Champs-Élysées. Cafe Tortoni dates from 1858. The Teatro Colon impresses as it did in 1908. This shopping capital offers premium retail therapy. Walk colonial cobblestoned streets to a tango show, learn about Eva Peron, or attend a musical festival. |
| Cruises from Ushuaia Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city, is located on the Beagle Channel, where soaring mountains, ice-blue glaciers, and an historic lighthouse create an ideal backdrop. The capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, it was first settled by British missionaries. During the first half of the 20th C the major building of the city was a prison, built by the Argentinian government for repeat offenders and serious criminals, as the subpolar oceanic climate made escape difficult. Today the Old Prison is a National Historical Monument housing the Museo Maritimo, where visitors can explore the history of the Argentine Navy. It is a treasure trove of exhibits of Antarctic discovery and research. Today, Ushuaia is a key port for Antarctic tourists and research traffic. |
| Cruises from Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro is a large Brazilian city situated on the South Atlantic Coast of South America. It is perhaps best known for its carnivals and the largest art deco statue in existence, the giant Christ the Redeemer Statue that is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. While there absorb the magnificent views and you will feel as though you are taking a walk in the clouds. If possible, just before sunset, take the cable car (made famous in the James Bond film Moonraker) to its top and see Rio’s breathtaking landscape light up before you. |
| Cruises from Santos (Sao Paulo) The municipality of Santos, in the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil, is the largest seaport in Latin America. It is a beehive of activity that offers an intense cultural experience. It is in fact a great city to explore, with its own idiosyncrasies, and the exquisite way of living of its inhabitants. Not to be overlooked are the world-class restaurants that offer a diverse regional and international cuisine to suit all tastes. Primarily due to its world’s coffee exports, Santos is a wealthy, modern city, yet is home to canals that are over a hundred years old. |
| Cruises from San Antonio San Antonio, Chile, is a Pacific port 63 km south of the port of Valparaiso. San Antonio is the largest freight handling port on the western coast of South America. The city lies on hills and coastal dunes north of the mouth of the Maipo River. It was seriously affected by earthquakes most recently in 1985 and 2010. The port connects to the capital Santiago 116 km by a good road to the east; and to the heritage city of Valparaiso 62 km to the north. San Antonio is the hub of the area’s fishing industry. |
