The island is of volcanic origin, with highest peak Yuwandake 605m. One ninth of the island is within the borders of the Amami Gunto Quasi-National Park. The economy is based on agriculture and commercial fishing. Sugar cane, rice and sweet potatoes are grown, which are also the ingredients for local distillation into shochu.
