Cruises from Ishinomaki
Ishinomaki, population 147,000, is a coastal city facing Matsushima Bay and the Pacific Ocean, on the Japanese island of Honshu. Its coastline forms part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park, created after the Great East Japanese Earthquake of 2011. The epicentre of this costliest natural disaster in history was 140 km due east of Ishinomaki. A 5m tsunami destroyed Ishinomaki port.
(It also destroyed the Fukushima nuclear reactors 120 km to the south, and it even broke off icebergs as far away as Antarctica). Ishinomaki traditionally has been a centre for commercial fishing, especially for the cultivation of oysters.
