Yatsushiro lies at the southern end of the mountainous and volcanic Japanese island of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. Facing the East China Sea, it lies 67km ESE of Nagasaki. The port area overlooks the Amakusa islands, which protect the port from the East China Sea and China’s mainland city of Shanghai to the distant west. The port itself is key to Kyushu’s international trade logistics.
