Silver Explorer — Ship Review Rating: 4 out of 5 based on 1 ratings.

Life aboard Silver Explorer
In early 2019 Silver Explorer crosses the Pacific to Japan and South Korea, and in mind-year makes a detailed exploration of the Aleutian Islands and coast of Alaska. There’s an outstanding cruise of 18 nights in August 2019 that crosses from Nome in Alaska, through the Northwest Passage to Tromsø in Norway. This is one of the few explorer vessels that follow this path. In September Explorer continues to sail around Iceland and Norway. In October she heads south along the west coast of South America, to again sail in Antarctic waters. From December 2019 to February 2020 Silver Explorer is based in Ushuaia to make serious forays to the Antarctica Peninsula. Plan ahead to April 2020, when Silver Explorer arrives in Cairns. Before and after Cairns you can visit South Pacific islands, PNG, Micronesia, and Japan. There’s a unique 21-night voyage in January 2021 that departs from Dunedin to East Antarctica; followed by a 14-night journey from Dunedin to Melbourne vis Macquarie Island. Your Expedition Leader will give in depth information about local cultures, history and wildlife in your cruise region. As a small ship with Zodiacs, passengers will be taken on land tours by qualified tour leaders. Have your health checks well before embarking on an expedition cruise.

Expensively refitted in 2017, and carrying just 144 passengers (and 117 crew), what can you expect onboard? Butler service, casual attire and open-seated dining, genuine hospitality, anytime access to the Captain’s bridge (weather permitting), and all-inclusive service are some of the pleasures you can expect. On shore your fare includes hosted adventures lead by scientists and destination experts. Your fellow guests will be adventurous couples and single travellers of mature years who enjoy nature and wild life at close range. They will probably be some of the most interesting people you’ll ever meet. The ship will cater to your pampering, fitness, shopping, and contact-with-the-outside-world needs.

Accommodation
The staterooms are the largest for any explorer ship, all with sea and sky views, and furnished with all the amenities you could wish for. Accommodation is most comfortable, expanding in size and extras with the choice of eight suite levels. All staterooms feature Champagne upon arrival, fresh fruit and flowers, beverage cabinet replenished regularly, electronic entertainment and communications, regular room service, and butler services. Bedding is excellent and the marbled bathroom comes with European bath amenities and rainforest showers. Staterooms can be inter-connected and most suites accommodate a third person.

There are six types of accommodation and 11 price grades. Six suites have a private balcony, and 14 have glass doors that open to a narrow French Balcony. Higher suite categories come with more space and additional amenities, such as dry cleaning and pressing, coffee machine, extended butler services, and a good amount of free usage of world-wide telephone and Internet time. The Owner’s Suite has two rooms with interconnecting door to provide a separate lounge, bedroom, and two bathrooms. This vessel has been described as ‘an exclusive floating country club’. No suites are wheelchair-accessible.

Food and Dining
All passengers can be seated in The Restaurant for all meals, which are open-seating. Breakfast offers buffet and waiter service. Lunch is also buffet style. Dinner menus are multi-course gourmet affairs, and feature signature dishes created by Relais & Châeaux. Table settings and service are exquisite.

In the morning have a Continental breakfast in the Observation Lounge. Alfresco lunch with waiter service is at the Outdoor Grill, weather permitting, for grills, fresh-from-the-oven pizza, and other lighter options. The Panorama Lounge is the place for mid-morning bouillon, late afternoon High Tea, and cocktail-hour tapas. Room service is complimentary and in-suite dining is available 24 hours a day.

Entertainment
Having packed the recommended clothing for the ‘cruise’, passengers don all the gear provided by the ship for each day’s activities. Reaching shore by eight Zodiac boats, explorers visit locations inaccessible to larger vessels. Every afternoon the expedition leader and his team recap the day's adventures and preview the next day's program in The Theatre or the Observation Lounge. At night expeditioners dress as for a luxury yacht, where the staff knows everyone’s names and drinks are complimentary. Relax with a cognac in Connoisseur’s Corner. A pianist or soloist may entertain in the Panorama Lounge. There is no casino, but plenty of board games.

Amenities include a library with an Internet Café, boutique shopping, a full-service spa, beauty salon, fitness centre, sauna and steam room, and two top-deck whirlpools. Most walking-for-exercise will be ashore. Gratuities are included in the cruise fare. At the Captain’s discretion, visit the bridge 24 hours a day.
