Oriana — Ship Review Rating: 3.8 out of 5 based on 8 ratings.

Life aboard Oriana
Oriana is a mid-sized adults-only ship operating year round out of Southampton for the British market. Cruises range from 3 to 50 nights to the Mediterranean (as far east as Venice), the Baltic Sea (staying overnight at St Petersburg), the fjords of Norway including the Arctic region of mainland Norway, Iceland, UK waters, Atlantic islands, and the Caribbean. Cruises are varied and port-intensive, offering a wide selection of itineraries. Oriana leaves the fleet in August 2019 for an undisclosed buyer. Oriana will be replaced by Iona, a new 180,000-ton ship which is due in 2020.

Oriana debuted in 1995, and at 69,840 GT she carries 1,880 passengers. Oriana was the first super liner built for British clientele, and is the fastest of the P&O fleet. During her 2016 makeover she was fitted with 27 new cabins, Ocean Grill restaurant, Sorrento Italian restaurant, aft deck bar, and upgrades to the Oasis Spa and Al Fresco Mediterranean café. She sparkles with her Art Deco Tiffany glass dome. Past guests praise the standard of service, efficiency and friendliness of the crew. Movements on and off the vessel are handled expeditiously. Oriana has a specialty restaurant by British celebrity chef Gary Rhodes. P&O-organized tours give excellent introductions to ports-of-call. This vessel (and P&O Line) has been recommended as “Best for ex-UK Cruises”. The fleet flies the British flag, but ships are registered in Bermuda to allow for weddings at sea.

Accommodation
Oriana has 936 cabins – 594 outside cabins, eight suites, 16 mini-suites and eight specially designed disabled cabins. As one expects in an elegant four-star vessel, staterooms are spacious, most comfortable, with excellent bedding and furnishings. The wide range of cabin configurations allows for four-berth cabins to singles sharing a cabin. Staterooms have all the expected amenities, including satellite TV channels, tea/coffee making facilities, fridge, writing desk, and daily steward service. On arrival receive a luxurious pamper pack of toiletries. Two lower beds can convert to a king-size bed.

Balcony staterooms have a bathroom with bath and shower, clothes pressing facilities, lounge area with sofa and table, DVD, and full height glass doors to the balcony. Mini-suites add a coffee machine, bathrobe and slippers, and magazines and newspapers on arrival – along with fruit, flowers, Champagne, chocolates – and daily canapés. Move up to the spacious full suites for a bathroom with whirlpool, guest bathroom with WC, walk-in dressing area, reclining deck chairs, and butler service. There are two single cabins next to the Terrace pool.

Food and Dining
Oriana has two main restaurants, operating on the two seating service: Peninsula and Oriental (apropos for a P&O vessel). The food service is highly rated, meals are of the English variety, and curries are heavily featured. For something special try fine dining at Oriana Rhodes restaurant (at extra cost) named for the UK celebrity chef Gary Rhodes. Pre-dinner drinks are available at the adjacent Tiffany’s Bar. New to the vessel are the Open Grill restaurant by Marco Pierre White and the Italian eatery Sorrento.

The Conservatory is for self-service breakfast and buffet meals. On some evenings it becomes a reservations-only venue for French Bistro, Indian or Southeast Asian cuisine. There are many lounges and bars, each with its own atmosphere. On the top deck is The Crows Nest, with spectacular day views and evening piano music. On the Lido deck are the Terrace Bar overlooking the stern, a casual eatery Al Fresco Pizzeria, and Riviera for cocktails next to the pool.

Entertainment
The Pacific Lounge is the entertainment centre – by day for craft classes and at night for comedy and cabaret. The Theatre Royal stages production shows with the feel of a West End theatre. The in-house Headliners Production Company features outstanding song-and-dance presentations superbly produced for each P&O ship at its Southampton studios. Chaplin’s Cinema is used for lectures, excellent port enhancement talks, and evening block-buster cinema. For solitude retire to the library, writing room or card tables. Ballroom fans can select from four large wooden dance floors. Teachers are on hand for dance, as also are computer instructors in the Cyber study. The Music Festivals at Sea programme offers opera, operetta, and recitals, all of which are presented by well-known names from radio, television and stage.

The Oasis Spa offers a full range of services including sauna and steam rooms, and is adjacent to a modern high-tech and well-supervised gymnasium. The sports court is covered with net and hosts a range of ball games for individual or tournament play. Golf nets are separate. There are three outdoor pools and five whirlpools. Just walk four laps of the wrap-around promenade deck, for a mile of exercise before breakfast.
