Europe has so many navigable rivers offering wonderful river cruise experiences that travellers are spoilt for choice. The Danube is the key to river cruising in Europe, as the great river crosses from Germany through Serbia, Austria and Hungary into Romania before emptying into the Black Sea. The Saone and Rhone Rivers let you explore the famed region of Burgundy, the lavender-scented hills of Provence and the wild, majestic scenery of the Ardeche region. Cruise along the Seine from Paris, through the historic heart of Normandy, to the beaches of the Atlantic Coast. The Rhine is one of Europe’s major arteries. It flows into the North Sea from its beginnings in the Alps, through Switzerland, Germany, France and Holland. The beautiful Douro rises in the hills north of Madrid and meanders through northern Portugal to the fascinating city of Porto, and on to the Atlantic. Most cruises are round trips from Porto. The Volga river in Russia allows you to discover the stunning architecture and unique cultural heritage of Russia's most interesting cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg.
River craft of APT Amadeus Waterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic and Uniworld service all of Europe’s rivers and canals, and come with integrated land tours to major cities. River cruises start at 7 nights, and range up to 24 nights. Cruises may follow seasonal themes (think wine and tulips) or year-round themes (music and culinary). Russian rivers are inaccessible in the northern winter.
Cruises between Amsterdam and the Black Sea, and south to France and Switzerland sail year-round March to November with all Lines. For Southern France cruise on the River Royale, Swiss Pearl or Avalon Scenery, and for Portugal sail on the Douro Spirit. For Russian waters cruise on Litvinov, Viking Surkov or Tolstoy (Moscow to St. Petersburg), and for Kiev (Ukraine) to the Black Sea on the Dnieper River sail with Taras Shevchenko.

Featured Europe - Rivers Cruise Ports
| Cruises from Avignon Avignon is a town in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in SE France, located on the Rhône River just north of its junction with the Durance River. Strategically situated high above the Rhône and encircled by medieval ramparts, Avignon's walled old town is a warren of cobbled streets, lantern-lit passageways and architectural treasures. Bathed in the extraordinarily brilliant Provencal light, this former papal enclave has long attracted artists and painters as well as those in search of a cultural change. It is one of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts, some of the finest examples of medieval fortification, and its historic centre. |
| Cruises from Lyon Lyon (or Lyons) is the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region in eastern France, located at the junction of the Rhône and the Saône Rivers, between Paris and Marseille. The city is known for its historical architectural landmarks at the Historic site, so that UNESCO recently listed Vieux Lyon, including the Croix-Rousse and Presqu'île areas, as a world heritage site. This is well deserved as the Gothic and Renaissance district is famous for its maze of narrow streets with quaint cathedrals, churches and buildings of historical importance that feature architecture from the 12th century to modern times. |
| Cruises from Nuremberg Nuremberg, is a city in the German state of Bavaria, situated on the Pegnitz River and the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal. In the Middle Ages the city expanded and increased in importance due to its location on a key trade route from Italy to Northern Europe. Nuremberg held great significance during the Nazi Germany era, as the site of huge Nazi Party conventions, and an important site for military production, including airplanes, submarines and tanks. But the old town of Nuremberg with its Gothic churches, splendid patricians' houses and romantic corners, result in an atmosphere of lively co-existence between medieval and modern, and between the past and the present. |
| Cruises from Passau Passau is a town in Lower Bavaria, Germany, at the junction of three Rivers: the Danube, the Inn from the South, and the Ilz coming out of the Bavarian Forest to the North. During the Renaissance and early modern period it became one of the most prolific centres of sword and bladed weapon manufacture in Germany. Today it is notable for its gothic and baroque architecture. The setting of the Old Town created by Italian baroque masters in the 17th century shows soaring towers, picturesque places, enchanting promenades and romantic lanes. Passau with its unique charm and atmosphere is one of the most beautiful and spectacular German cities on the Danube. |
| Cruises from Budapest Budapest is the capital and largest city of Hungary, situated on both banks of the river Danube, with its 346 river cruise ships (2019). Originally with the cities of Buda on the west bank and Pest on the east bank, it became a single city with their unification in 1873. The city’s rich and colourful history, its extensive World Heritage Site including the Danube River banks, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, and the Millennium Underground Railway, have resulted in its becoming an important tourist centre in Central Europe. Explore the city on foot and see the historical traces on her grand buildings, and in cobbled streets. |
| Cruises from Basel Basel on the river Rhine is Switzerland's third most populous city, and located where the Swiss, French and German borders meet. Indeed, the river cruise ships berth within a stone’s throw of the triple intersection. It has suburbs in France and Germany, and interestingly the language spoken is called Basel German. Basel is a transport centre – air, rail and road – and accessible to Switzerland’s major cities Zurich and Geneva. River travellers arrive from Amsterdam and can take a coach south and re-join river ships at Lyon on the Rhône and continue on to the Mediterranean. |
