Dili is the capital, largest city, chief port and commercial centre of East Timor (Timor-Leste). It lies on the north coast of the island of Timur, the southern half of which is Indonesian territory. The city is now undergoing a rapid transformation with most changes capturing the essence of reconstruction in East Timor. Burnt-out buildings still form a small part of the scenery, while its former Portuguese colonial flavour can still be found in remaining villas and churches along the seafront.
