Cruises from Jayapura
Jayapura is the capital of the Indonesian-administered territory of Papua on the island of New Guinea. It is situated on a bay called Teluk Yos Sudarso, aka Humboldt Bay. The city lies just 32 km west of the border with Papua New Guinea. Jayapura – ‘City of Victory’ – was named by Suharto when Indonesia took over sovereignty from the Dutch in 1963.
The city of one quarter million, lies just 280 km south of the equator, surrounded by hills and mountains. Jayapura is a big, bustling and fascinating city relative to the region. While it is safe, cheap and interesting, the city is not at all tourist-oriented and English is not widely spoken.
