Maasdam cruises for 2019-2020

Maasdam runs ‘EXC In-Depth Voyages’ that focus on local customs, food, dance and so forth, and use zodiac inflatables to explore. Look out for these itineraries. In mid-2019 MS Maasdam sails the fjords of Alaska and British Columbia out of San Francisco, then crosses the North Pacific to Yokohama in Japan (interesting ports on the way are Kodiak, Nome and Petropavlovsk). Starting August 2019 over 43 nights visit ports in Japan, Micronesia, New Guinea, Melanesia and the South Pacific, arriving in Sydney in late September. There are two interesting voyages to consider: 26 September 2019 – a 51-night circumnavigation of Australia out of Sydney that visits New Zealand, Pacific islands, and Komodo Island in Indonesia; and 17 October 2019 – the Queensland coast, PNG islands, Pacific islands and northern New Zealand. Until February 2020 Maasdam sails Australian and New Zealand waters. In March 2020 Maasdam crosses the Pacific for the Mexican Riviera, and late in 2020 for Alaska. Indeed, Maasdam has planned some very interesting itineraries less than 3000 km from Australia. Holland America Line arranges excellent onshore tours, and pre- and post-tour packages.

Maasdam — Ship Review Rating: 4 out of 5 based on 14 ratings.

Life aboard Maasdam

Maasdam’s refit in 2015 added many features of HAL’s Signature of Excellence program: Lanai and Verandah staterooms, a new multi-themed triple bar area called the Mix, and The Retreat, a private resort-style pool with sophisticated amenities and service. Appealing to older guests are the traditional features – high tea, formal nights, antique displays and ballroom dancing – while contemporary features appeal to younger guests. Families join the shorter cruises during school vacations. You will appreciate HAL’s excellent service and onboard atmosphere, as attested to by the high rate of returning passengers. Tips and gratuities are added to your fare, and be assured your Indonesian and Filipino stewards and their families back home are greatly benefitted. Crew members are very loyal to HAL.

Accommodation
Staterooms are spacious, and include: Interior large and standard; Ocean-view with panoramic windows; Lanai, that open directly to a promenade deck but with mirrored glass doors for privacy; Spa, located near the Greenhouse Spa and Salon; and three levels of suites. Basic features include a flat-panel TV and DVD player (book your DVDs by phone), ample storage, personal safe, excellent twin/queen bedding and bath amenities, fresh fruit on request, and nightly turndown service. The décor is very pleasing and comfortable. Complimentary meals can be ordered for in-suite dining around the clock. Triple and quad cabins are available, as well as interconnecting cabins for up to six guests. Many staterooms are modified accessible and wheelchair accessible. There are no single cabins.

Suites are significantly larger, lavish, and come with a full-size bath. The sitting area has a double sofa bed. The Pinnacle and Neptune Suites have the services of a personal concierge and access to the private Neptune Lounge with large screen TV, library, sofas, and socialising with other suite guests. Extras include priority boarding and dining requests, complimentary laundry and pressing services, and a cocktail party with ship officers. All cabin categories have Spa staterooms that come with spa-related amenities and extras, and easy access to the spa facilities. Also, all categories of staterooms offer wheelchair facilities.

Food and Dining
The ship has six formal to casual dining areas. The two-deck main Dining Room serves open-seating breakfast and lunch. For dinner chose between set-seating at first or second servings, or open seating on the upper deck. The Master Chefs’ three-course menus are excellent, and waiting staff are friendly Indonesian and Filipino stewards. Ask for a table for 2/4/6/8. Special dietary requests must be ordered pre-cruise. One night in seven is a formal night, perhaps preceded with pre-dinner drinks, then after your meal retire to the Showroom at Sea or a musical recital. There are two alternative restaurants, best to reserve in advance: The Pinnacle Grill (pay extra) for steaks and seafood (and occasionally a special Pinnacle – Le Cirque), and the Italian-American-influenced Canaletto. Ask about beverage packages.

The Lido Restaurant has multiple serving stations varying their offerings throughout the day and late evening. The casual Terrace Grill serves all the types of fast food you’d expect, and a variety of cooked-to-order specialties. Relax in Explorations Café, a gathering place that mixes together a library and coffee bar where one can check email or read the morning paper. The recent refit added a new lounge called Mix, a multi-themed area that combines three separate bars: Martinis, Champagne and Spirits & Ales. Afternoon tea, the occasional High Tea, and the ice cream bar provide in-between snacks.

Entertainment
At night the Show Lounge presents Las Vegas-style revues, dancers, illusionists, comedians and variety acts. Alternatively, attend a musical recital in one of the lounges, dance to the backing of a band ensemble, watch sport in the multi-screen sports bar, or sip drinks while your request is sung by the pianist or guitarist. View recent movies (with popcorn) in the Screening Room, unless you’d prefer to watch your choice of DVD in your cabin. Guests can crowd around the Piano Bar for a sing-along: this is a very popular location. Through the evening the disco and nightclub on the top deck will take you into the early hours of the morning, very inviting if the new day is a sea day and you’ve ordered breakfast in your cabin. The large casino has lots of playing options.

Zodiac inflatables are a new addition, for cruises of 12 to 34 days. During the day you have many choices: well-organised shore excursions; the Culinary Arts Centre with cooking demonstrations; the Digital Workshop that includes photography and making a vacation video; and fitness programs and recreational sport. The main pool is one of the most beautiful at sea. The giant Greenhouse Spa includes a range of thermal suites, and gymnasium with circuit-training and fitness classes. Sports include basketball and volleyball. Children are catered for at Club HAL (for ages 3-7 and 8-12 years), and teenagers socialise at The Loft and The Oasis pool.
