Cruises from Kilwa Kisiwani
Kilwa Kisiwani is a community on an Indian Ocean island in the Kilwa archipelago off the southern Swahili Coast of present-day Tanzania in eastern Africa. It is 240 km S of Dar es Salaam. Kilwa Kisiwani is an archaeological city-state site dating from the 8th C. Tourists from Dar es Salaam stay in Kilwa Masoko on the mainland, obtain a permit to visit, and cross by dhow over the narrow channel to Kisiwani.
Kilwa Kisiwani shows cemeteries, fortifications, mosque, palace, and open spaces for gatherings. It reached its peak of wealth between the 13th and 15th C, when stone buildings appeared. Earlier buildings were wattle-and-daub.
