Kilwa Kisiwani is a community on an Indian Ocean island in the Kilwa archipelago off the southern Swahili Coast of present-day Tanzania in eastern Africa. It is 240 km S of Dar es Salaam. Kilwa Kisiwani is an archaeological city-state site dating from the 8th C. Tourists from Dar es Salaam stay in Kilwa Masoko on the mainland, obtain a permit to visit, and cross by dhow over the narrow channel to Kisiwani. Kilwa Kisiwani shows cemeteries, fortifications, mosque, palace, and open spaces for gatherings. It reached its peak of wealth between the 13th and 15th C, when stone buildings appeared. Earlier buildings were wattle-and-daub.

As a centre for commerce, among Kilwa's exports were spices, tortoiseshell, coconut oil, ivory, and aromatic gums, as well as gold and slaves. From about 1100-1600 Kilwa minted coins, and some have been found as far away as Great Zimbabwe. Ceramic wares found here include African red-burnished pottery, and in addition ceramics from as far away as the Arabian Peninsula and China. The Great Mosque of Kilwa (10th to 13th C) is one of the earliest surviving mosques on the Swahili Coast. In the early fourteenth century, Sultan al-Hasan ibn Sulaiman, who also built the nearby Palace of Husuni Kubwa, added a southern extension which included a great dome.

The Palace of Husuni Kubwa situated outside the town, was an early 14th-century sultan's palace and emporium. Husuni Ndogo ("Little Fort") is built from coral rubble and limestone mortar. In 2004, Kilwa Kisiwani was inscribed on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger. The eastern section of the Palace of Husuni Kubwa, for example, is progressively disappearing, endangered by water erosion.
