Alphonse Atoll is one of two islands in the Alphonse Group, in the Outer Islands of the Seychelles Archipelago, Western Indian Ocean. The island has fewer than 100 inhabits, and is actually 400km from Mahé, the main city and island of the Seychelles. This beautiful atoll is nearly 7km across, with a large central lagoon. Above water level is the triangular low land mass of Alphonse, sufficient for a 1220m airport runway, modern bungalows (about 40) and resort facilities. Near the northern end of the runway is an old cemetery. Tracks through the vegetation and beside the beaches are lined by coconut palms, most in plantation layout. For exercise, stroll around the five kilometre beach.

The island group was named in 1562 on Portuguese charts. In recent years it has been opened to the public, but most inhabitants are birds – wedge-tailed shearwaters, common waxbill, sociable plover, red knot, tufted duck and common chiffchaff. Along with palms are papaya, banana, agave and cotton trees. Local villagers are employed by the resort in tourism.

Fly-fishing, wading the shallow waters surrounding the island is a key attraction for serious fishermen. Non-fishing activities include reef walks, swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, bicycling, and tennis. The tall angled palm trees, blue water during daytime and coloured sunsets are a photographer’s dream. Go there to amble along the wide white beaches, passing slow tortoises and scurrying crabs.
