Sometimes it really is all about the journey rather than the destination, and this was one of those times. I was looking for some well-earned rest and relaxation, and Seabourn Quest proved to be the perfect escape.
Seabourn Quest is a small ultra-luxury ship accommodating fewer than 500 guests, which for a small-ship lover like me was ideal. The ship was immaculately clean and maintained to an exceptionally high standard, creating an atmosphere that felt elegant yet comfortable from the moment I stepped on board.
The welcome was my first real taste of the Seabourn experience. For me, true luxury is all about service, and there was not a single day where the service was anything less than exceptional. From the moment I boarded and was greeted by the smiling faces of the crew, it was obvious they genuinely enjoyed what they did. Having worked on cruise ships myself for more than 10 years, I know that a happy crew makes all the difference to the onboard atmosphere, and Seabourn clearly gets this right.
By the second morning the crew already knew me by name and remembered exactly what beverage I liked with breakfast. Every interaction felt warm, polished and sincere. There were no rushed moments or indifferent expressions, just a genuine desire to ensure guests were happy and relaxed throughout the voyage.
As my suite was not quite ready when I boarded, I took the opportunity to explore the ship. My first stop was Seabourn Square, which felt completely different from a traditional cruise ship reception area. There were never long queues and, if you did happen to wait briefly, it was in an open lounge space where guests could enjoy coffee and cake, browse the internet, read from the extensive library or simply step outside onto the deck for fresh air. It was a thoughtful and refreshing approach that immediately made the ship feel more intimate and relaxed.
I then headed downstairs to The Club, which quickly became one of my favourite places on board. Mornings often began with trivia before spending time out on the Terrace, where two whirlpools and a plunge pool offered welcome relief from the tropical heat while sailing through destinations such as Cairns and Townsville.
Afternoons brought traditional high tea with delicate sandwiches and pastries, while in the early evening a sushi bar would magically appear, with dishes freshly prepared to order from the menu. It became an easy and enjoyable part of the daily routine.
My suite truly had the wow factor. From the spacious layout to the luxurious bathroom and thoughtful design touches, everything felt exceptionally well considered. The bathroom featured a full-sized bath, separate shower, double marble vanity and ample storage space. A blackout curtain could divide the suite into separate living and sleeping areas, while the walk-in wardrobe was an added bonus I absolutely loved.
The living area included a full-sized sofa, coffee table and dining table, making in-suite dining particularly enjoyable. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors opened onto the balcony, creating a lovely setting for breakfast, lunch or dinner overlooking the ocean.
Practical details were also impressive, with plenty of power points and USB ports for charging devices. One feature I especially appreciated was the automatic floor lighting that gently illuminated the room during the night without disturbing the peaceful atmosphere.
The mini bar was stocked with soft drinks and water, and guests could request additional preferences through their suite steward. I was delighted to discover that if I fancied a gin and tonic before dinner, it would quietly appear in my suite. I also appreciated Seabourn’s approach to reducing single-use plastics, with refillable water bottles available throughout the ship so guests were never far from drinking water.
Dining options on board were extensive and consistently excellent. I particularly enjoyed taking breakfast from the buffet out onto the aft deck each morning. Solis, the specialty restaurant, requires reservations once on board and the number of visits allowed depends on the cruise length. It was absolutely worth booking. The meal was one of the best I have enjoyed in a long time, made even better by the knowledgeable waitstaff helping pair wines with each course under Seabourn’s open bar policy.
The pool deck maintained the same relaxed atmosphere found throughout the ship. While popular at times, it never felt crowded and there were always sun lounges, tables or whirlpool spas available somewhere around the deck.
The final area worth mentioning is the spa. Beyond the usual massage rooms and salon facilities, the spa also features a thermal suite and relaxation terrace. While many of these facilities come at an additional cost, they were well worth it and became the perfect way to unwind after a leisurely day on board.
Overall, Seabourn Quest delivers a beautifully relaxed small-ship luxury experience overflowing with personalised service, spacious comfort and understated elegance. It is a wonderful option for travellers seeking a refined and intimate cruise atmosphere where the journey itself becomes the highlight.
