Viking delivers a refined adults-only ocean cruise experience, combining spacious accommodation, thoughtful wellness facilities, elegant dining and a calm onboard atmosphere. Sailing from Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal, Sally and Jenny enjoyed a stylish start to their voyage, with harbour views, polished service and the relaxed Scandinavian design that Viking is known for.

Our journey began in Sydney at White Bay Cruise Terminal, one of the most memorable departure points in the world. Sailing out from White Bay is an experience in itself, as the ship glides beneath the Harbour Bridge and past the iconic Opera House. It is an unforgettable way to begin a voyage.

From the moment we stepped on board, we were welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine, instantly setting the tone for a relaxed and indulgent holiday. Following a swift muster check, we made our way to our Penthouse Veranda Suite, a space that felt more like a stylish city apartment than a cruise cabin.

The suite was impressively spacious, with crisp, modern décor in calming tones of beige and cream. It featured two generously sized comfortable beds, a three-seater sofa and thoughtful touches such as a personal coffee machine, perfect for those who enjoy their morning brew in privacy.

The mini fridge was stocked with a complimentary embarkation selection, and the expansive balcony was furnished with comfortable, contemporary outdoor seating. It was a lovely space to enjoy the fresh air and watch the coastline slip by.

The bathroom was equally well appointed, featuring a sleek floor-to-ceiling glass shower, a welcome upgrade from the shower curtains still found on some ships. There was also ample counter space and storage throughout the suite, making it easy to settle in.

Highlights

Sailing out of Sydney Harbour from White Bay was a standout moment, with the ship passing beneath the Harbour Bridge and by the Opera House in spectacular fashion.

For travellers drawn to wellness experiences, Viking excels with its thoughtfully designed thermal suite area. Guests can enjoy a cold plunge pool, steam room, sauna, hydrotherapy spa and a fully equipped gym spread across multiple rooms. This space quickly became a favourite onboard retreat, often visited daily by guests seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.

Viking’s adults-only approach creates a distinctly calm and refined atmosphere. With just under 1,000 guests, the ship offers a sense of understated luxury, complemented by open spaces and carefully curated artwork that evokes the spirit and history of Viking heritage. Even the lift experience is immersive, featuring a mural depicting members of Torstein Hagen’s family in a whimsical, storybook style.

One of the highlights on board is the infinity pool at the stern, where you can unwind while watching the ocean stretch endlessly behind you. It is the perfect place to relax with a cocktail in hand, especially with beverages included in the fare. With complimentary Wi-Fi also available, sharing those envy-inducing moments back home is effortless.

Cruise Tip

Book specialty dining early, especially The Chef’s Table and Manfredi’s. Both are popular and well worth planning ahead for.

Dining on board is equally impressive. The World Café offers a buffet-style experience just steps from the infinity pool, making it easy to grab a bite without straying far from the sun. Nearby, the Pool Grill serves casual favourites such as burgers, hot dogs and fresh salads. For cooler days, the indoor pool area provides a comfortable alternative, also conveniently located near dining options.

Afternoon tea enthusiasts will appreciate the elegant service in the Wintergarden on Deck 7. Served daily from 4pm to 5pm, this experience features tiered trays of delicate treats accompanied by an extensive selection of teas. It is perfectly enjoyed indoors, regardless of the weather.

Specialty dining is a highlight and should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment. The Chef’s Table offers a refined multi-course degustation menu with expertly paired wines, an indulgent experience best approached with a healthy appetite.

Manfredi’s, the ship’s Italian restaurant, is another standout. The osso buco proved to be a favourite among our group, with some guests returning for a second visit to enjoy it again.

For a taste of Norwegian tradition, Mamsen’s offers a cosy and authentic experience. Here, guests can enjoy specialties such as waffles and hearty split pea soup in the Explorer’s Lounge, often accompanied by live acoustic music. Whether warming up with soup in the evening or indulging in a waffle at any time of day, it is a charming and memorable part of the onboard experience.

Overall, Viking offers a polished and peaceful style of cruising that is ideal for travellers who value comfort, good food, spacious surroundings and a relaxed adults-only environment. From the memorable sailaway through Sydney Harbour to the elegant dining and daily wellness rituals, this voyage delivered a wonderfully refined escape.
