Island Princess — Ship Review Rating: 4.1 out of 5 based on 17 ratings.

Life aboard Island Princess
From May to September 2019 Island Princess returns to the Alaskan coast, one of the many cruise ships that tour the Inside Passage of Alaska’s fjord-lined coast. The 7-night cruises depart alternatively from Vancouver and Whittier (for Anchorage). (Spend a few days in Anchorage, see Captain Cook’s display in the museum, visit the zoo, and meet the locals, many of whom we heard speaking ‘Pirate’.) From September 2019 she heads for the Panama Canal and the Western Caribbean. In January 2020 plan ahead for a circumnavigation of South America, with a side trip to Easter Island. This will be a very popular and unforgettable excursion. It can be broken into sectors. In May/June 2019 there’s a superb crossing of the North Atlantic from Fort Lauderdale to Southampton. This cruise takes in Iceland, and if extended it reaches the far north islands of Norway – see the midnight sun and hopefully the northern lights. Until October 2020 Island Princess sails out of Southampton for some wonderful itineraries, so check them out. Consider taking the Grand Cruise from Southampton to Singapore (51-nights) in late 2020. Princess Line has an excellent range of on-shore programs for each port of call, possibly the best of any major Line, and these can be planned ahead of the cruise, or organised during the cruise.

Being a large resort ship, built in 2003 and refurbished in 2017, on-board entertainment and facilities are state-of-the-art for cruise ships. The ship itself is a cruise destination. She has two decks of public spaces and plenty of lifts and staircases that make for ease of movement. There is an ‘adults only’ two-deck Sanctuary area with padded sunloungers and pool for your solitude. Newly fitted is a large ‘Movies Under the Stars’ screen. This is one of the few large ships with a walk around promenade deck. Passengers enjoy mingling in a sophisticated setting, with good food and entertainment in an affordable package. Island Princess offers traditional and flexible dining in the main dining rooms. This ship caters well for families, though a majority are seniors. Boarding logistics are very smooth. Tips and gratuities are additional.

Accommodation
There are six main categories of staterooms - Suites with balcony, Mini-Suites with balcony, Balcony, Oceanview, Oceanview Obstructed, and Interior – and 33 grades, which give a broad choice according to guests’ needs of space and price. All cabins have pleasing décor and reasonable storage space, satellite TV, refrigerator, and 24-hour room service. Fresh fruit (by request), evening bed turn-down, bathroom lotions, and bathrobes (by request) come with every stateroom. Standard cabins are well-designed and functional. Some cabins accommodate a third and even a fourth person. Generally twin beds can be made up into a queen-size bed. Bedding is top quality. There are no interconnecting or single cabins. There are 20 wheelchair-accessible cabins, and guests with disabilities are well catered for. An in-cabin dining menu is available 24-hours.

Suites and Mini-Suites come with sitting area and desk, convertible sofa bed, full bathtub alongside the shower, Jacuzzi tub, mostly two TVs, a larger balcony, and specialty Ultimate Balcony Dining (extra cost). Full Suites have a larger floor area with dining table in the sitting area, more space for entertaining, wider deck, and more special touches such as DVD/CD player with free library access, one-time complimentary mini-bar, valet and laundry services, Web access at the Internet café, and Disembarkation Lounge. Smoking is only permitted in designated smoking areas, and excludes staterooms and balconies. There are no butlers for any staterooms. Smoking is only permitted in designated smoking areas, and excludes staterooms and balconies.

Food and Dining
Traditional dining in Provence Dining Room has two seatings for dinner. Bordeaux Dining Room offers Anytime Dining, eating when and where you want. Both serve five course meals changed daily, with chefs inducted into the prestigious Chaîne des Rôtisseurs gastronomic society. Tables are set for 2, 4, 6 or 8, and dress is formal or smart casual. Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria (with cover charge) serves Italian cuisine. The Bayou Café and Steakhouse is a New Orleans-themed restaurant (with modest cover charge) with the food and music you’d expect. There’s also Crab Shack. On cruises longer than three days dress for a formal night for every week of sailing. Breakfast and lunch are provided in an open seating arrangement. A continental breakfast can be delivered to your stateroom, and there is a stateroom menu. Passengers booked in cabins with balconies can order several special, romantic meals served on the verandah - Ultimate Balcony Dining. Order special dietary requests before sailing.

Casual dining is available at Horizon Court buffet all day and informal sit-down waiter service at night. The pizzeria gives an excellent choice, and will also provide room delivery for a small charge. There is a burger and hotdog grill, and take-away food is available at the pool side. For lighter snacks try the ice-cream sundae bar, or the patisserie for coffees and pastries. Afternoon tea is served daily. There are nine bars and lounges. Coffee, iced tea and milk are available 24 hours a day. For an exclusive (extra charge) dining experience for ten guests make a reservation for The Chef’s Table. Chocolate Journey is new.

Entertainment
In the evening having two show lounges (both theatre and cabaret style) is a great way to give passengers more entertainment choices. During her 2009 refurbishment additions included a Movies Under the Stars screen in the main pool area for new movie releases, sporting events and concert videos. Adults have their own private sunbathing area, the Sanctuary, at the front of the ship. Add nine bars and lounges, nightclub and dance floors, and the casino, to the list of evening options. Alternatively, just stroll around and shop duty-free, or for a quiet time retire to the Library/Card Room or Internet Café. Weddings are officiated by the Captain.

On-shore programs are outstanding. Princess arranges on-shore tours at ports of call that may be booked before or during the cruise. Daytime entertainment offerings include all the cruise ship standards from ship tours to table tennis, plus a wide range of ScholarShip@Sea enrichment activities (computers, ceramics, dance etc.) for every taste. The gym is well equipped, the sports deck offers many activities, golf enthusiasts practice on simulated courses, and the health spa complex is there for your pampering. Under 18s have their own areas and professional age-group activities.
