Life aboard Amsterdam
In early 2019 MS Amsterdam embarked on a Grand World Voyage that is completed in April. From June to September she offers mostly 14-night cruises of the Alaskan fjord coast sailing from Seattle. In September/October there’s a most interesting cruise along the Pacific coast of the Americas over 35 nights – the lands of the ancient Incas, Aztecs and Maya empires. From October set out from San Diego on a 51-night cruise around Hawaii and many South Pacific islands, across the Equator and International Date Line. In 2020 the Grand World Voyage of 118 nights from Fort Lauderdale circles South America, then Australia, SE Asia, Indian Ocean and South Africa. This vessel is a good size for ease of disembarking at ports for tours, and the on-board ambience is warm: good for a long cruise. Holland America Line arranges excellent onshore tours, and pre- and post-tour packages.

Amsterdam’s 2015 refit added many features of HAL’s Signature of Excellence program: the Pinnacle Grill alternative restaurant, the Neptune Lounge for suite guests, and the Culinary Arts Centre with demonstration kitchen. Appealing to older guests are the traditional features – high tea, formal nights, antique displays and ballroom dancing – while contemporary features appeal to younger guests. You will appreciate HAL’s excellent service and onboard atmosphere, as attested to by the high rate of returning passengers. Tips and gratuities are additional to the fare, and be assured your Indonesian and Filipino stewards and their families back home are greatly benefitted. Crew members are very loyal to HAL.

Accommodation
Staterooms are spacious, and include: Interior large and standard; Ocean-view, some with panoramic windows; and three levels of suites – Vista, Neptune and Pinnacle. Basic features include a flat-panel TV and DVD player (book your DVDs by phone), ample storage, personal safe, excellent twin/queen bedding and bath amenities, fresh fruit on request, and nightly turndown service. The décor is very pleasing and comfortable. Complimentary meals can be ordered for in-suite dining around the clock. Triple and quad cabins are available, as well as interconnecting cabins for up to six guests. Many staterooms are modified accessible and wheelchair accessible (21 cabins, some near and some far from elevators). There are no single cabins.

Suites are significantly larger, lavish, and come with a full-size bath. The sitting area has a double sofa bed. The Pinnacle and Neptune Suites have the services of a personal concierge and access to the private Neptune Lounge with large screen TV, library, sofas, and socialising with other suite guests. Extra amenities include priority boarding and dining requests, complimentary laundry and pressing services, and a cocktail party with ship officers. Pinnacle Suites have in addition a microwave oven, pantry for meal preparation, whirlpool bath for four, and of course so much extra space at 108 m2 plus balcony.

Food and Dining
The ship has seven formal to casual dining areas. The two-deck main Dining Room serves open-seating breakfast and lunch. For dinner chose between set-seating at first or second servings, or open seating on the upper deck. The waiting staff are friendly Indonesian and Filipino stewards. Ask for a table for 2/4/6/8. Special dietary requests can be ordered pre-cruise. One night in seven is a formal night, perhaps preceded with pre-dinner drinks, then after your meal retire to the Showroom at Sea or a musical recital. There are two alternative restaurants, best to reserve in advance: The pay extra Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood (and occasionally the Pinnacle – Le Cirque), and the Italian-American-influenced Canaletto. Ask about wine packages.

The Lido Restaurant, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, has two serving lines during the day offering food cooked à la minute, and at night opens as a popular and casual bistro. Outside meal times it serves sandwiches, ice cream, and special late-night offerings. Additionally, there are pool-side burgers, hot dogs, Mexican food, and a coffee bar. Relax in Explorations Café, a gathering place that mixes together a library and coffee bar, where one can check email or read the morning paper. Afternoon tea, the occasional High Tea, and the ice cream bar provide in-between snacks.

Entertainment
In the evenings the two-deck Queen’s Lounge offers (twice nightly) musical productions, cabaret, and its features include three video screens. Alternatively, attend a musical recital in one of the lounges, dance to the backing of a band ensemble, watch sport in the multi-screen sports bar, or sip drinks while your request is sung by the pianist or guitarist. View recent movies in the Screening Room, unless you’d prefer to watch your choice of DVD in your cabin. Through the evening the disco and nightclub on the top deck will take you into the early hours of the morning, very inviting if the new day is a Sea Day and you’ve ordered breakfast in your cabin. The large casino has lots of playing options.

By day there are Bridge, Bingo, trivia games, Sudoku, cooking demos, movies and the like. Book early for the for-fee culinary workshops and wine tastings in the Wayang Theatre and Culinary Arts Centre. The Microsoft Digital Workshops include photography, creating web-sites and blogs, making a vacation video, and one-on-one coaching. The fresh-water Lido deck pool, flanked by two hot tubs, has a retractable cover. The giant Greenhouse Spa includes sauna, steam rooms, treatment rooms, and a fully-equipped gymnasium with circuit-training and fitness classes. There are also courts and a jogging course. Children are catered for at Club HAL (for ages 3-7 and 8-12 years), and teenagers socialise at The Loft and The Oasis. Sports include basketball and volleyball.
