Life aboard Costa Mediterranea
Until March 2020 Costa Mediterranea sails 14-night circuits of the western Indian Ocean, around the islands of Mauritius, Réunion and Madagascar. These islands have interesting histories, flora, fauna and cultures, well worth getting to know. From April the ship is in the Mediterranean, sailing mostly 7-night itineraries from the Italian port of Bari to the Greek islands. From September she relocates to Venice. Then in late October Costa Mediterranea heads east to Singapore (22 nights) through the Suez Canal. In SE Asia cruises depart Singapore for 7 and 14-night itineraries to the coasts of Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia.

At 85,700 GT and carrying 2112 passengers, Costa Mediterranea is a large resort ship that entered service in 2003. The vessel offers “Cruising Italian Style.” The 10-deck atrium is stunning, and the indoor décor mixes classical Italy with contemporary features. Costa has come up with a trendy new image in Mediterranea. The layout allows easy flow to public spaces, and there are several floors for dancing and socialising. Announcements come in English and Italian. The ship appeals to young and young-at-heart, who enjoy lots of noise, outdoor eating, and late nights. Costa places a high premium on families.

Accommodation
Of its 1,057 staterooms, 78% include a sea view and 80% of these have balconies. There are 14 price grades. All staterooms have TV with extensive channel selections (from movies to ship and shore activities), including interactive account payments, along with all modern standard amenities such as vanity desk, hairdryer, personal safe, mini-bar, controllable AC and phone. Interior and outside-view cabins are spacious. Some have pull-down berths for families. Room service provides light snacks. The teak-decked balconies give good views through glass panels with wooden railings.

Staterooms range from Grand Suites to Panorama and Oceanview. While the suites are not large, they do offer more space and a larger bathroom. Fifty-four suites have a private balcony, and there are four Wellness suites. Suites come with daily delivery of lunch and dinner menus, pillow menu, bathrobe and slippers, kit of bath products, sparkling wine and cold canapes (embarkation day only), daily fruit baskets, an additional Captain's cocktail party, and complimentary dinner at Medusa Supper Club. The most private cabins and suites overlook the stern of the ship. There are no single cabins, and four handicapped-accessible cabins.

Food and Dining
The two-level Argentieri Restaurant offers all three meals at traditional two fixed sittings. Themed evenings are part of the cruise. Guests may choose their table for breakfast and lunch. The noontime meal is the largest of the day, with more course and menu choices. The a la carte Medusa Supper Club (reservations-only and cover-charge) offers a menu designed by a three-star Michelin chef, hence expect the best food on board.

For casual self-serve dining try the Perla del Lago Buffet Restaurant, with indoor/outdoor seating near the pools. Included are a grill, pasta bar, and Pizzeria Posillipo. Enjoy a cappuccino or glass of wine at the casual Oriental Cafe with its four separate salons. Excellent coffees are available around the ship.

Entertainment
The three-deck Osiris Theatre, seating over 1000, is the centre for major production revues, variety shows and individual performers. The vessel has a large number of lounges, every one with a stage and large dance floor. The Lounge Talia is the nightclub, and Selva the atmospheric disco. A huge variety of day activities, found in every lounge, includes bingo, art auctions, trivia games, horse races, port and shopping talks. Poolside games and contests occur two or three times a day. At night there are themed games and entertainment.

The top three decks are devoted to fitness, spa and sun. Amenities include four pools (one covered), four Jacuzzis, jogging track, sports courts, aerobics room with instructor-led classes, and a superb gymnasium and fitness centre. Fitness classes may be free or pay-extra. The two-deck Ischia Spa includes a solarium, treatment rooms, sauna and steam rooms, and beauty parlour. Costa Kids Club offers extensive programs for youngsters, and guaranteed relaxation for parents. For teens there is the Squok Club with PlayStation entertainment. This includes the Mondo Virtuale (video game room), and teen hours at the disco (through midnight each night).
