We use & recommend Viator.com otherwise search online & call us if you need help. Or just rent a taxi/pushbikes/tour/charter from the wharf when you berth, often the best value but be among the first ashore!
Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
Japan, China, Korea, South-East Asia (mainly Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam), the Philippines, Indonesia and India – offer a vast range of cultures, scenery, architecture and cuisine. On-shore tours may venture up rivers, or inland to archaeological treasures, nature reserves, remnants of colonial eras, world’s-most-modern-buildings, and tropical resorts. Soak up the serenity of Nagasaki, visit the commercial powerhouse of Shanghai, bargain in Hong Kong, see whole families on a motorcycle in Ho Chi Minh City, or visit the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Each country offers its unique specialities. Contrast Bali with Beijing, Mumbai with Malaysia, Sabah with Singapore.
Large cruise ships operate in specific regions, such as East/West Malaysia, ex-Australia to SE and E Asia, between Singapore and ports of China, and around the circuit of China/Japan and Korea. Indian ports are visited ex Dubai, and by cruises relocating between the Mediterranean and Far East. Vessels offer Western-style cruising along with superb Asian cuisines and now cater to the growing Asian travel market. Explorer vessels visit smaller ports, including the northern islands of Japan, the great Mekong River, and rarely-seen sights of Borneo and the Celebes (Indonesia).
Both Azamara ships travel to the East and can be highly recommended. Celebrity Millennium departs Australia for SE and E Asia in November 2013, offering a variety of cruises in Asian waters until May 2014. Three HAL ships are in SE Asian waters in early 2014 and have excellent itineraries. Volendam leaves Singapore for Hong Kong in early 2014 for a 28-night circuit of Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. This will be a superb tour, opening your eyes to many uncommonly-visited sites. Princess Line has seven ships in Asia, and three depart from Fremantle to SE Asia. Royal Caribbean and Costa each have two ships in E Asia. Many Asian cruises are sectors of World and Grand Cruises by Princess, P&O, Cunard and HAL ships. For luxury cruising sail with Seabourn Pride, Silver Shadow, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. For the most exclusive 12-night exploration consider taking True North around Western New Guinea. Explorer vessel Orion leaves Broome in August 2014 for the Kimberley coast and then six islands of Indonesia. Orion is the only ship to take you through Borneo and nearby exciting islands. The luxury explorer vessel Oceanic Discoverer visits the rarely-seen eastern waters of Indonesia in September 2013 and April 2014, islands that feature in The Malay Archipelago by Alfred Russel Wallace, perhaps the greatest classic of natural history and travel.

It is the largest centre of commerce and finance on mainland China, and the show-piece of the world's fastest-growing major economy. It is a major cruise port rivalling Hong Kong and Singapore, and the largest container port in the world. Check your visa requirements. Go to the Bund to watch ships on the river and marvel at the huge variety of architectural styles on display. Watch the crowds pass by in People’s Square. Shoppers, make a beeline for the Fabric Market where you can have a suit or dress tailor-made at bargain prices. |

|
| Cruises from Kobe Kobe is the capital of the Hyogo Prefecture and lies on the southern side of the main island of Honshu, Japan. A cosmopolitan port city with an international flavour it is hemmed in by Mt. Rokko, and it constantly comes up number one in expatriate rankings of the best place to live in Japan. The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, with its collection comprising sculptures, prints and paintings, built following the horrific earthquake in 1995, is a tribute to the spirit of mankind. Take a ride on the Shin-Kobe Ropeway cable car. |
|
| Cruises from Tokyo Tokyo, located on the eastern side of the main island of Honshu, is the core of the most populated area in the world (urban area 38M). Its stringent policy of seclusion ended in 1854 and opened Japan to outside trade. In 1869, the 17-year-old Emperor Meiji moved to Edo, and the city was renamed Tokyo (meaning Eastern Capital). In the 20th C the city was hit by the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake, and WWII firebombing |
|
| Cruises from Yokohama Yokohama is located on the western coast of Tokyo Bay, less than half an hour's train journey directly south of Tokyo. It is the second largest city in Japan and one of the cities most visited by foreigners. Despite being devastated by bombings in WWII it remains a maritime city and retains an international flavour. Nissan and city of Yokohama have launched Japan’s first-ever car-sharing program with ultra-compact EVs (electric vehicles). The main objectives of the project are to reduce carbon emissions on public roads, improve the quality of transportation in the city, and promote tourism. |
|
| Cruises from Singapore Singapore is an island nation located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. It lies 137 km N of the Equator, just south of the Malaysian state of Johor. You'll find historic sites like the Thian Hock Keng temple, superlative shopping, including gargantuan malls, and numerous beaches. You will certainly not be surprised to know that over ten million tourists visit Singapore each year. |
