This region covers the sub-Arctic region in an arc from Vladivostok, Kuril Islands and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Eastern Russia, across to Kodiak in the Aleutian Islands. (Anchorage is included in ‘Alaska & North America.’) The outstanding feature is the volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula, and in the vicinity of the port-capital Petropavlovsk is incredible beauty – the Decade Volcanoes Avachinsky and Koryaksky to the north, and the vast Avacha Bay to the south. Ships visit in the relatively warm northern summer after the snow has melted.

Ponant ships, built for ice conditions, make real explorations of the far North Pacific. A number of vessels traverse the north Pacific when repositioning in April/May and September between Japan/China and Alaska/Canada, and at lower fares. These include vessels from Holland America, Celebrity, Viking, Azamara, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, and NCL. Check on how many ports they visit call at around the Kamchatka Peninsula, Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands, otherwise this is just an ocean crossing with little time to view the geography and fauna.

Many repositioning ships traverse this region around April/May and September/October annually. In June 2019 Le Soléal visits a string of ports cross the North Pacific between Russia and Canada; and in July MS Maasdam calls at four ports in the transition from Seattle to Japan. In September 2019 Le Boréal spends 14 nights exploring the islands of Siberian Russian and Alaska, departing from Nome and disembarking at Seward (for Anchorage), for the best in-depth voyage in this part of the world. Also in September of 2019 and 2020 another Ponant ship, L’Austral, leaves Greenland to cross the Northwest Passage and passes the Bering Sea on route to Anchorage.
