We use & recommend Viator.com otherwise search online & call us if you need help. Or just rent a taxi/pushbikes/tour/charter from the wharf when you berth, often the best value but be among the first ashore!
Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
This region covers the sub-Arctic region in an arc from Vladivostok and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Eastern Russia, across to Kodiak in the Aleutian Islands. (Anchorage is included in ‘Alaska & Pacific Coast.) The outstanding feature is the volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula, and in the vicinity of the port-capital Petropavlovsk is incredible beauty – the Decade Volcanoes Avachinsky and Koryaksky to the north, and the vast Avacha Bay to the south. Ships visit in the relatively warm northern summer after the snow has melted.
A few vessels traverse the far north Pacific when repositioning in April/May and September between Japan/China and Alaska/Canada, at lower fares. These include vessels from Holland America, Princess and Celebrity Lines. Check as to whether they call at Kodiak, Petropavlovsk or Vladivostok, otherwise this is just an ocean crossing. For example, Diamond Princess passes the Bering Sea to Japan and Vladivostok in September 2013 with no ports of call.
HAL’s Amsterdam calls at Kodiak and the Aleutian Islands as part of its 78-nigtht circumnavigation of the Pacific in September 2014. Celebrity Millennium crosses from Japan to Vancouver in May 2014, calling at Petropavlovsk in Russia.

Featured North Pacific Cruise Ports
| Cruises from Nome Nome is a seaport used by freighters and cruise ships, located on the southern side of the Seward Peninsula in Norton Sound, Alaska, just 250km across from Siberian Russia. It was a small Inupiat Eskimo settlement until the discovery of gold in 1898 brought over 20,000 fortune seekers, but most left after 10 years, and today there are approximately 4000 residents with half being Native Americans. Interestingly, Nome is the finish line of the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race covering over 1680km across the wilderness from Anchorage. The race begins on the first Saturday in March, and is the most popular sporting event in Alaska. |
