This region covers the sub-Arctic region in an arc from Vladivostok and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Eastern Russia, across to Kodiak in the Aleutian Islands. (Anchorage is included in ‘Alaska & Pacific Coast.) The outstanding feature is the volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula, and in the vicinity of the port-capital Petropavlovsk is incredible beauty – the Decade Volcanoes Avachinsky and Koryaksky to the north, and the vast Avacha Bay to the south. Ships visit in the relatively warm northern summer after the snow has melted.

A few vessels traverse the far north Pacific when repositioning in April/May and September between Japan/China and Alaska/Canada, at lower fares. These include vessels from Holland America and Celebrity Lines. Check as to whether they call at Kodiak, Petropavlovsk or Vladivostok, otherwise this is just an ocean crossing.

Amsterdam, Volendam, Celebrity Millennium, and Silver Shadow call at the Aleutian Islands as part of their crossing of the Pacific around April/May and September/October each year. In August 2017 Silver Discoverer makes an 18-night exploration voyage in the Russian Kuril Islands and Kamchatka Peninsula. Plan ahead to join Viking Spirit’s luxury 22-night cruise around Japan, Russian Petropavlovsk, Aleutian Islands, and the glacial coast Alaska (Tokyo to Vancouver.)
