Its remote location and seclusion from other islands has resulted in Isla Española having a large number of endemic fauna. Cristóbal lies at the northern entrance to the Panama Canal. It is part of the province of Colón, a port city at the entrance to Limon Bay, at the Atlantic (Caribbean) entrance of the canal. (Interestingly, Cristóbal Colón is the Spanish translation for Christopher Columbus.) Daphne Island (Isla Daphne) is a small inactive volcanic island north of Santa Cruz Island and 12 km west of the Baltra Airport in the Galápagos Islands, a small archipelago of islands belonging to Ecuador in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is also known as Isla Daphne Major to distinguish it from its smaller companion (Daphne Minor) just 4 km to the NE.
