Wind Star cruises for 2020-2021

Wind Star alternates between the Panama region and the Mediterranean, crossing the Atlantic twice yearly around March and November. The Central America cruises of seven nights visit ports in Costa Rica and Panama, with a daylight crossing of the Panama Canal – an outstanding scenic cruise. Wet landings are made by Zodiac, and guided by a naturalist explore rainforests, beaches, animal life, and zipline. The transatlantic crossings of 15 nights, between St Martin and Lisbon, allow you time to rest, enjoy the luxurious features of the vessel, see myriads of stars at night, chat with officers on the Bridge, and strike up friendships with fellow guests. Mediterranean cruises from April to November range from 7 to 17 nights. Cruises are mostly round trips from Athens to the Greek isles, and Kusadasi to see the ruins of ancient Ephesus.

Life aboard Wind Star

This boutique yacht at 5350 GT with up to 148 guests was last refitted in 2019. Its four 62 m masts hold 2200 sq.m. of computer-controlled sails, and an ingenious water hydraulic ballast system limits roll to 6 degrees. She runs at 10 knots with engines only; up to 15.8 knots (29 kph) with prevailing wind. The open bridge policy means you can learn first-hand about the ship’s operation. Sails power the ship up to 40% of the time. The ship has wide open teak decks with hidden nooks amongst the sail gear for privacy. Public spaces include the piano bar, Wheel House, Radio Room, Library and pool area. Clientele are mostly young couples and solo travellers who can take full advantage of the water activities, in an unstructured yet chic atmosphere. Dress is casual, and friendly service is from the mostly Indonesian and Filipino crew. With a draft of only 4.1 m access is available to smaller ports. Allow for paying tips and for bottled water.

Accommodation
Staterooms are on the lower decks 1 and 2. All 74 staterooms have ocean views, queen beds (or twins if preferred), flat-screen TV with DVD player, and Bose SoundDock speakers for Apple iPods. Staterooms are comfortable, with Egyptian cotton bedding, spacious bath that features granite counter tops, ample storage, and a roomy shower (no bath tubs) with massage shower head, accompanied by L’Occitane bath products and waffle-weave robe and slippers. Fresh fruit and flowers arrive daily. There’s wireless Internet access (pay), and private safe. Room service is around the clock.

With an expansive 220 square feet, the Owner’s Suite gives you everything offered in a stateroom, plus a sitting area and separate in-room dining space. Of course, there’s controllable AC, and nightly turn-down service. The mini-bar is stocked daily and payable for drinks taken (15% bar surcharge). All cabins have two outside-view portholes.

Food and Dining
Wind Star has two primary dining venues. AmphorA restaurant (deck 3) offers gourmet, course-by-course cuisine in the evenings. Signature dishes created by master chefs are featured. Veranda restaurant (deck 4) offers casual buffet and full-service dining for breakfast and lunch. All dining is open seating, so you dine with whom and whenever you wish. Non-alcoholic beverages and coffees are inclusive.

For dining under the stars, make a reservation for Candles Grill (also deck 4) next to the pool and beneath the flying bridge aft of the ship, which features grilled seafood, steaks and skewers. At the bar, hot and cold hors d’oeuvres appear at cocktail times. At no extra charge, a ‘Cuisine de l’Amour’ romantic dinner for two can be served in your cabin. With candle.

Entertainment
There are no show lounges, actually offering a relief to get away from all that noise. The main lounge has a small casino and a dance floor where a trio often play their music. The main lounge is also used for social functions, and nightly informative port talks and destination briefings. More personal entertainment will be a DVD in your cabin late at night, or an after-dinner stroll on the deck. Or, relax in the small library. There is a small fitness centre with treadmills, exercise cycles and sauna. WindSpa packages at extra cost can be pre-booked.

There’s a tiny ‘dip’ pool and also a hot tub. Since daily activities mostly centre around the water, guests have unlimited access to all water sports equipment that includes kayaks, windsurfs, water skis, and snorkels. There’s a water sports platform aft of the ship.
