We use & recommend Viator.com otherwise search online & call us if you need help. Or just rent a taxi/pushbikes/tour/charter from the wharf when you berth, often the best value but be among the first ashore!
Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
Alaska is regarded as one of the most scenic cruising regions on earth, and with good reason. With towering mountain ranges, crystalline glaciers and abundant wildlife you'll fill up your camera memory in no time! Touring before or after your Alaskan cruise provides the opportunity to take in the Denali National Park, visit Victoria and the stunning Butchart Gardens, or explore the Rockies. The California coast as far south as Ensenada (Mexico) is also popular.
From May to September larger vessels (1400 to 2400 passengers) from Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America Line, Royal Caribbean, Princess and Norwegian Cruise Line have 24 vessels cruising this coastline. Two luxury smaller vessels (around 400 passengers) visiting Alaska are Silver Shadow and Seven Seas Navigator. Most cruises are of 7 nights, but range up to 14 nights. Choose a round-trip cruise (from Vancouver/Seattle/San Francisco), or one way (either northbound or southbound, with the northern port Anchorage or Seward). Carnival Inspiration, Princess Crown and HAL’s Veendam cruise the coast of California between Los Angeles and Ensenada (Mexico).
On-shore excursions for all cruise lines use the same tour providers, so the advantage of a luxury ship is the onboard ambiance, fewer guests, and more-travelled age group. The scenery is the same for all – magnificent. In selecting a cruise, consider pre-and post-tour options from your ports of embarkation and disembarkation. Cross the North Pacific and include Alaska with Silver Shadow in September 2013.

| Cruises from Vancouver Vancouver is a sophisticated coastal city located to the south of British Columbia, Canada. The city is linguistically and ethnically diverse as reflected in the fact that 52 percent of its inhabitants do not speak English as their first language. Ranked highly in worldwide ‘liveable city’ rankings for many years and being surrounded by nature’s scenery at its best, makes tourism its second largest industry. This beautiful city brims with attractions such as Vancouver's Olympic Village located on the SE side of False Creek, which offers stunning views of the city's downtown skyline and Coastal mountains. |
| Cruises from Anchorage (Whittier) Ships call at the ports of Seward and Whittier on the SE coast of Alaska as gateways to Anchorage, which is home to almost half the population of Alaska. What better way to see Alaska than taking the impressive train ride from Seward to Anchorage. You'll see wild animals, beautiful scenery, and enjoy a great meal in the diner car. On arrival be sure to visit the historical Alaska Railroad depot and walk the streets to discover interesting restaurants and a great range of stores (such as Modern Dwellers), and meet very friendly locals. Set alongside magnificent scenery, Anchorage is an unforgettable destination. |
| Cruises from Los Angeles Los Angeles, also called LA, or the City of Angels, is situated in southern California, and as the home base of Hollywood is the Entertainment Capital of the world. There is so much to do in this famous city, such as visit LA's most popular beach Santa Monica that offers ocean activities, shopping, street performers and more, or simply investigate the fantastic shopping venues. Helicopter tours are now becoming extremely popular, as one gets to see beaches, movie star homes, the Hollywood sign, downtown, and all of the attractions through the eyes of an expert. |
| Cruises from San Francisco San Francisco, on the Californian coast, is one of America’s most attractive cities with its famous Golden Gate Bridge, steep streets that provide panoramic views of the beautiful San Francisco Bay and surrounding mountains, and its eclectic mix of Victorian and modern architecture. Perhaps also famous for the nearby Silicon Valley, this ‘City by the Bay’ has become even more international with large numbers of immigrants from Asia and Latin America. Explore the amazing Fisherman’s Wharf that offers great food, and the numerous boutiques. Take a hop-on hop-off bus that crosses the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoy the beautiful scenery and expensive homes at the Marin Headlands. |
| Cruises from Seattle Located just two hours south of Vancouver, Canada, the city of Seattle in USA is an international port that boasts three professional sports teams, hundreds of restaurants, a myriad of cultural venues and a lifestyle that is unique to the Pacific Northwest. It is known as Emerald City due to the lush evergreen forests in the area. Well known for its impressive musical history, from jazz to the rock music style of grunge, to this day Seattle hosts a diverse and influential alternative music scene. Never forget that, here, one can drink the best coffee on the planet. |
| Cruises from Anchorage (Seward) Seward is the most often used cruise ship port for Anchorage, Alaska. (Whittier is used by Princess Cruises.) It lies at the head of a fjord that enters the Gulf of Alaska in the North Pacific Ocean. Seward is a two to four hour trip by car, bus or train from Anchorage. Ice-free the year round, Seward was a natural choice as the ocean terminal and supply centre during the construction of the Alaska Railroad that links Seward and Whittier passing through Anchorage to Fairbanks 760 km north. Fishing is great all year round and not surprisingly Seward is famous for its Annual Silver Salmon Derby, the biggest fishing event in Alaska. |
