Anegada is the northernmost of the British Virgin Islands, a group of islands that forms part of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands. To the north is the Atlantic Ocean, the deep Puerto Rico Trench, the Sargasso Sea, and the Bermuda Triangle. Anegada is formed from coral and limestone and hence flat, whereas all other BVI are volcanic and mountainous. Most of the population of Anegada live in one village, The Settlement. The economy depends on tourism and fishing – especially lobsters. There are a handful of villas, hotels and privately run inns on Anegada.

Horseshoe Reef spans 29km E-W on the north side of the island, the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean. It is also a ship-wreck paradise. Snorkellers and scuba divers delight in the reef’s mazes, tunnels and drops, which are rich in needle fish, mojarra, stingrays, parrot fish and other marine life. Those with sea legs enjoy water sports and sport fishing. Visitors can also explore the wreckages of numerous Spanish galleons, American privateers, and British warships.

Clear springs that bubble from coral beds support a variety of fauna special to the Virgin Islands area, including frangipani, turpentine trees, feathery sea lavender, and wild orchids. On the nature trail at Bones Bight catch a glimpse of the rare rock iguanas, and discover the exotic birds at Nutmeg Point. Also popular with visitors is Flamingo Pond, a protected area in the centre of the island, which is now rich with flamingos and other sea birds.
