Cousin Island, just 700 m across, is a small granite island in the Seychelles, in the Western Indian Ocean, 1300 km SW of the Somalian coast of Africa. Of the 160 or so islands of the Seychelles, Cousin is one of 42 granitic islands on the shallow waters (c. 50 m depth) of the Seychelles Bank. Cousin Island is a nature reserve and marked as an Important Bird Area. It is densely green, surrounded by beaches, mangroves, and coral reefs on three sides. Its historic coconut plantations have since 1968 reverted to natural vegetation.
