Cruises visiting Gizo & all Gizo cruises for  2019

View Gizo 2019 cruises for 2 ships listing 3 cruises from Gizo with today's best deals!

Gizo is the capital of the Western Province in the Solomon Islands, situated on Ghizo Island, approximately 380 km WNW of the capital Honiara, and is the second largest town in the country. According to local stories the area had a history of head-hunting, so nearby tribes took the unusual step of joining together to obliterate the Gizo tribe. As a result, the land became state-owned and prospered as an administrative and business centre. The small landing strip on the nearby island of Nusatupe makes Gizo relatively developed compared to other settlements in the vicinity. These days Gizo is a tourism centre with great trips available.

Today Gizo presents as a shanty town, the main street sealed in 2009 that runs along the waterfront lined with small stores and an open air market. The surrounding islands are dotted with palm trees and ringed by coral reefs and clear waters. Take a tour for a full day of diving with specialists, and investigate WWII wrecks and reefs that have some of the highest fish counts in the world. Also on offer are bushwalks to WWII land sites, village tours, bird watching excursions, snorkelling, and game fishing. Interestingly, Gizo was the operating base for Robert Ballard's The Search for Kennedy's PT 109. Kennedy’s motor torpedo boat lies about 16 km ESE of Gizo.

Artisans in the Western Province are known for their carvings from wood and stone. Woven bags, baskets and mats are also ancient village arts. Gizo offers a number of restaurants, with the standard fare being fresh seafood and fruit. Gizo and surrounding area are frequently subject to earthquakes and tsunamis, most recently in 2007, 2010, and 2011. From September 2016 large cruise ships began tendering to Gizo, previously visited only by smaller expedition vessels.
