Madang is the capital of Madang Province and a port on the north coast of Papua New Guinea. It was settled by Germans in the 19th C, then under Australian administration from 1919, and occupied by Japanese 1942-1944 when the town was virtually wiped out. Today its population of 24,000 includes many expatriates, and the city is the base for many NGOs and business branches. The town is said to be one of the prettiest towns in the South Pacific, due in part to its dramatic location on the tip of a peninsula encircled by mountains to 4000m. Coconut palms, cocoa trees and the spice cardamom are grown locally.

Many visitors come for the fine scuba diving in nearby waters, others to see a pretty, small, relatively safe PNG town that is a wonderful place to walk around and explore. The shoreline has many small sandy swimming spots with grass, large trees and shade. The Madang Festival is held annually. The festival is a colourful display of singsings performed by cultural groups from the Madang Province. From Madang one can visit the Balek Wildlife Sanctuary with fine scenery on the way. Other options include a morning shore excursion the village of Bil Bil, where native women create earthenware pots and present a traditional sing-sing.

Take a boat tour of the beautiful harbour, tour nearby Krangket Island, and marvel at the pristine and colourful coral reefs while snorkelling at Pig Island. Madang and its region are perhaps best known for the wonderful diving opportunities. With its reef-fringed lowlands and offshore volcanic islands, it is ideal for people of all experience levels. Amazingly, it is home to large populations of sharks, sea turtles, and hundreds of species of brilliantly colourful sea slugs. Interestingly, 173 regional languages are spoken in the province.
