Galle is a city situated on the SW tip of Sri Langka, 119 km from Colombo. It is perhaps best known for its world heritage site, the Galle Fort, which is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by Europeans. It highlights the interaction between European architectural styles and south Asian traditions. A ‘must see’, the fort with its grass-clad walls, a church, a mosque, and pleasant surroundings, helps visitors to understand the interesting historical background to this delightful city. Other prominent landmarks in Galle include the natural harbour, the National Maritime Museum, St. Mary's Cathedral founded by Jesuit priests, and Amangalla, the historic luxury hotel.

Historically, Galle may have supplied spices to King Solomon in Bible times, and over centuries has been a prominent seaport for Persians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Malays, Indians, and Chinese. Since the 16th C it was occupied by the Dutch, Portuguese and British. The fort was built by the Dutch in 1663. Today the city has a multi-ethnic population and is a centre of education. Explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site by foot, with its Dutch-colonial buildings, mosques, churches, mansions, museums, and beautifully restored hotels.

Pedlar’s Inn Café is a groovy little place in an old colonial house, where shakes, coffees and sandwiches are served. If adventurous, hot-air ballooning is a romantic and wonderful way to see Galle and its surroundings from an entirely new angle. Thousands here were killed by the Tsunami of 2004, but the city was quickly rebuilt. To restore its historical background, the famous cricket ground - Galle International Stadium - was also rebuilt. The aim of the Municipal Council to create a cool and healthy coastal city with a clean green canopy has certainly succeeded.
