Every detail was communicated, followed up and confirmed. I received an email with updated departure information, and while the printing of the check in information seems minor, it really is a detail that makes the process easy. Rob was able to answer all my enquiries swiftly and he was very knowledgable. We will use you guys again for our next cruise."

Cruises visiting Shimonoseki & all Shimonoseki cruises for  2019

View Shimonoseki 2019 cruises for 1 ships listing 3 cruises from Shimonoseki with today's best deals!

Shimonoseki is located at the SW tip of Honshu, Japan. It faces the narrow Tsushima Strait that separates Japan’s largest island Honshu from Kyushu to the south. The 20 km strait links the Sea of Japan on the west, to the Inland Sea on the east. Shimonoseki is often compared to San Francisco. It is one of the world’s busiest lanes of marine shipping, with traffic from China and South Korea. The city figured in major changes to Japan’s history, from the 12th C to recent times. To take in an overview of the city environs and the strait, use the ropeway to the peak of Hinoyama (268m) just 4 km from the port.

At the port the Kaikyokan Aquarium is worth visiting, also take in panoramic views from the 153 m Kaikyou Yume Tower. Shimonoseki is a city where you can stroll down streets with a rich legacy of culture and history, and enjoy the abundance of seafood. You may even get to taste whale, and the locally caught puffer fish from which the delicacy fugu is taken. Visit Chofu, a castle town that includes old samurai residences and their earthen walls, which give one a sense of seeing history. You will appreciate the Japanese gardens of the homes and indeed the town, which include interesting stone sculptures and a delightful pavilion.

Among the many historic sites is the Akama-Jingu Shrine, with its statue of Earless Hoichi, a legendary figure in Japanese history, and which commands a spectacular view of Kanmon Channel, used by 700 ships a day. There are numerous shopping streets and malls including Sea Mall Shimonoseki, the largest shopping centre in west Japan when it was built. If visiting when the Karoto Market is open, you will thoroughly enjoy the delicious meals served by the open-air stalls.
