Cruises visiting Ambon Island & all Ambon Island cruises for  2019

View Ambon Island 2019 cruises for 1 ships listing 1 cruises from Ambon Island with today's best deals!

Ambon is a tiny though mountainous, well-watered and fertile island in the middle of the Maluku islands in Indonesia. The favourite activity of visitors is diving, as Ambon is home to an underwater garden of very healthy coral growth, and resultant varied marine life that is easily accessible, and shows no indication of human interference. Discover centuries-old fortresses and the literature of local kingdoms that traces the story of the people, from periods of prosperity to escalating and controlled trades, harsh colonialism, a gruelling struggle, and finally, to independence. There are many guided walks to admire the attractive surroundings.

As Ambon was used by the Japanese as their headquarters during WW11, remnants from the war still remain, both in museums and the open air. Some war artefacts, such as the cargo ship from the war - now covered in corals, sponges and schools of fish - remain silently underwater. Today these remnants are among the most valued historical sites in Ambon. Located very close to the equator, the weather can be very hot and humid, so carry bottled drinking water to avoid dehydration.

From exploring the charming Kota Ambon, the main town of the island, there are many undiscovered gems ready for visitors to investigate. As one of the earliest places in Indonesia to be occupied by colonial powers, Ambon has a rich and ancient history. Not surprisingly, many of the Ambonese today have mixed European and Ambonese heritage. The town of Ambon – Kota Ambon – is known as Ambon Manis meaning sweet or beautiful Ambon. The name refers to both the beauty of the people here and the beauty of the tropical island location. Yet despite its size, it is a busy port of call and therefore has inherited the diversity of religions and colourful culture of the region.
