Les Andelys is a town in the Haute-Normandie region in northern France, located on the west bank of the Seine River, between Paris and Le Havre. It lies in a tight bend of the Seine, the valley being shaped by the river, forming white cliffs. A walk on the riverside offers beautiful views of the ruined castle Château-Gaillard, the old houses of Petit-Andely, and the Seine valley. Other attractions are the collegiate church Notre-Dame and the church Saint-Sauveur, while the 5th century Sainte Clotilde convent is the site of a miraculous spring and a pilgrimage every year on June 2.

The many buildings of Château-Gaillard dominate the town and offer living proof that Richard the Lionheart really existed. As both King of England and feudal Duke of Normandy, he built the fortress from 1196 to 1198. Yet the virtually impregnable fortress would live only a few years, just like Richard, who was too confident in his talents as a warrior. It was captured in 1204 by the French king Philip II after a lengthy siege. The remains provide amazing historical detail. Also, visit the Normandie-Niemen Memorial that recounts the story of the squadron created by General de Gaulle in September 1942 to represent France on the Eastern front.

Situated in a Natura 2000 Area, the banks of the Seine delight lovers of landscapes and flora. The construction of the present Grande Andely Notre Dame Collegiate Church, with its huge window closing the choir, started in the 13th century and spread over a period of 500 years. Building Château-Gaillard required the presence of over three thousand workers in Les Andelys. Born in 1594 in a hamlet of Les Andelys, the painter Nicolas Poussin, known for his love of Italy, is a major representative of classicism. His museum is installed in an old 17th century town house and displays collections connected with local history.
