Thursday Island, or 'T.I.' as it's usually known, is the name of the island and the town that is the administrative and commercial centre of the Torres Strait Islands. The island group is off the far north Queensland mainland in Torres Strait, just 39 km north of Cape York Peninsula. The lucrative pearling industry founded in 1885 attracted workers from around Asia, particularly South Pacific Islanders, and this has resulted in a fascinating cultural mosaic. Green Fort Hill provides views over the town of Thursday Island, and provides fascinating insights into the local history that dates back to 1880 when it acted as the defence centre for Australia. The gun emplacements are still there and the magazines below have been converted to a very interesting museum.

Although just three square kilometres in area, it is the most developed island in the Torres Strait Island Group and offers reef, island, and harbour cruises, helicopter flights, opportunities for diving, fishing and snorkelling, as well as a guided bus tour. No other place in Australia has a history longer or more colourful than these islands. Passing through the Strait were many famous seamen, including Captains Cook and Bligh, and even Jules Verne novel stranded the Nautilus there in Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Visit the Torres Strait Museum and the Japanese Pearl Divers Memorial. Explore the local township, the new Cultural Centre, and the shops that feature the island's most famous export, pearls.

Another option is to take the ferry to the Horn Island Jetty where one can catch live bait in an instance and then chuck out a handline and bring in a good catch every time. The Maritime Museum, and The Quetta Memorial Museum attached to the Quetta Memorial Church, are also worth visiting. The island is an attractive and easy going little place, but is one of the last great frontiers in Australia. English is the official language of the island, although Torres Strait Creole is predominant on a social level.
