Gayle was excellent as always and also thought of us when the cruise company needed people to more cabins and be given extra on board credit for doing so. Very happy with Gayle and Clean Cruising."

Hope Bay is located on Trinity Peninsula, the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, 350 km north of the Antarctic Circle. This is the closest part of Antarctica to the South American mainland. Hope Bay is 5 km long and 3 km wide, and opens into Antarctic Sound, a short strait separating Trinity Peninsula from a number of offshore islands. Actually, Hope Bay is often unreachable due to pack ice from the Larsen Ice Shelf clogging Antarctic Strait. It was in 1902 that the Antarctic Sound was first navigated by the vessel Antarctic belonging to the Swedish Antarctic Expedition.

Hope Bay was at one time the site of a British base, and there is now a permanently manned Argentinian research station there called Esperanza (Hope) Base. It is one of only two civilian settlements in Antarctica. The Base's motto is "Permanencia, un acto de sacrificio" ("Permanence, an act of sacrifice"). The base has tourist facilities that are visited by about 1,100 tourists each year. Interestingly, the base is famed as the birthplace of Emilio Marcos Palma, the first person to be born in Antarctica. The base has a polar climate characterized by strong winds (to 250 kph) that descend downwards from Antarctic ice sheet. Research projects include: glaciology, seismology, oceanography, coastal ecology, biology, geology, and limnology (study of inland waters).

The base now consists of 43 or so red huts that are home to around 55 people (10 families and two school teachers), and includes the school, civil registry, and cemetery. It was built in 1953. Hope Bay is an Important Bird Area for the gentoo penguin, brown skua, Antarctic tern, Wilson's storm petrel, kelp gull and snowy sheathbill. It has also one of the largest breeding colonies of Adélie penguins in Antarctica. Weddell seals often haul out on the beach and leopard seals hunt offshore.
