Queen Elizabeth Serves Up Traditional Cruising at Its Best For Jo

I was fortunate enough to sail on my first Cunard cruise onboard Queen Elizabeth, joining a short itinerary from Hobart to Sydney. What I was most looking forward to was sailing with a cruise line that celebrates its rich British heritage and long-standing history as one of the world’s oldest cruise brands.
Boarding was a breeze and we were soon stepping into the stunning three-level atrium. The centrepiece, a striking Art Deco mural of an ocean liner above the grand staircase, was a beautiful reminder of Cunard’s storied past. From here it was easy to explore some of the ship’s most iconic venues. The two-storey library and the elegant Queens Room felt like they belonged in a royal palace. The library is managed by its own librarian and stocked with thousands of books, while the Queens Room hosts everything from ballroom dancing to exercise classes and the famous white-glove afternoon tea each day.
Up on the higher decks, I loved spending time in the Garden Room, which, with its glass ceiling, feels like a light-filled solarium straight out of Versailles.
Outdoors there were pools and hot tubs, along with more traditional pastimes such as croquet and lawn bowls.
We stayed in a balcony cabin which was comfortable and well appointed, offering ample space to relax. Our favourite spot was the balcony, perfect for a glass of wine and soaking up the view. The bathroom was spacious, and we appreciated the Penhaligon’s amenities, a lovely British touch.
Dining onboard was a definite highlight. My favourites included the Steakhouse at The Verandah. The Steakhouse served premium cuts alongside delicious starters like Caribbean lobster cocktail, clam chowder and truffle fries. High tea was a full affair, with white-gloved waitstaff parading around the room delivering classic sweet and savoury treats. A string quartet playing in the background added to the experience. Dinners in the grand Britannia dining room were always special, with an extensive nightly menu and attentive, friendly service.
Don't miss out on the traditional afternoon tea in the Queens Room.
There was always something to do onboard. Cunard offers guest enrichment programs, and on our cruise we attended a fascinating Q&A session with Dr Paul Scully-Power, Australia’s first astronaut. His insights into space missions and NASA life were truly memorable. We also caught a live cooking demonstration in the theatre and picked up recipes from the main dining room. Music lovers were spoiled for choice, from acoustic guitarists in the Golden Lion Pub to a Beatles tribute band in the Queens Room. I wish I’d had time to try one of the many watercolour or craft classes on offer each day.
Sadly, our time onboard came to an end in Sydney, and I found myself already wondering when I’d next sail with Cunard. There is so much to love about this elegant, traditional style of cruising. If you enjoy seeing the world in style, Cunard should absolutely be on your list.
