Antarctica had always been on my bucket list, but very much a “one day” destination. It felt distant, slightly out of reach and something for the future rather than now. So when I was offered the opportunity to sail with Ponant onboard Le Commandant Charcot, I was incredibly excited, not only for the destination but also for the ship itself, which had long been on my wish list.

Ponant has operated in Antarctica for many years and is a true expert in the region, with several ships positioned here each season. Le Commandant Charcot is the standout of the fleet and the only commercial luxury icebreaker able to reach areas other ships cannot. Travelling at the start of the Antarctic season, we experienced her at her best, cutting through pack ice and delivering us directly onto the ice via the gangway for a memorable first impression.

Our journey began with a smooth Sydney to Santiago flight, followed by a pre-cruise stay at the Mandarin Oriental. From there, we joined fellow Ponant guests on a charter flight to Ushuaia.

The charter flight exceeded expectations, operated by a Boeing 787 with generous space and optional business class seating. LATAM staff provided excellent service, including a meal followed by cheese and champagne, and on arrival in Ushuaia we enjoyed a scenic tour and traditional Argentinian barbecue before boarding.

Embarkation was seamless, with luggage already in our staterooms. Cabins were spacious and well designed, with ample storage, a separate bathroom and toilet, a walk-in shower and a well-stocked minibar.

After departure, the Captain monitored conditions across the Drake Passage. While not completely calm, the crossing was far more comfortable than expected, with the ship handling conditions with ease. After one full sea day and two nights, we reached Antarctica and began our exploration.

Highlights

Wildlife sightings were a constant highlight, including Adélie, Chinstrap and Emperor penguins, as well as leopard seals and their pups. While orcas were not sighted on this voyage, they were seen on the following departure, highlighting the dynamic nature of the region.

Excursions were exceptionally well organised, with guests divided into small colour-coded groups and daily plans based on weather and ice conditions. Outfitted in Ponant’s polar jackets and boots, we moved efficiently to zodiac landings or directly onto the ice, with minimal waiting. Zodiac operations were straightforward and well managed, with crew guiding guests using a clear three-point contact approach, and staff were calm, attentive and reassuring throughout. Plus Ponant boasts a team of incredible naturist from all over the world, keen to share their passion and deep understanding of this unique region.

Our first landing at Half Moon Bay in the South Shetland Islands brought us face to face with penguins, seals and vast icy landscapes. The following day included visits to Aitcho Island and Yankee Harbour, offering a true Antarctic experience.

We then spent a full day navigating through ice towards Snow Hill, home to Emperor penguins. Walking directly from the ship onto the ice was a highlight, with a range of guided hikes available for all fitness levels.

Continuing through metre-thick pack ice was one of the most memorable parts of the journey, watching the ship move through the ice while spotting wildlife and ever-changing scenery. The ship’s design, including forward and aft bridges, allows precise navigation in these conditions.

On the return journey, we visited Devil Island and Brown Bluff, where large colonies of Adélie penguins were preparing to nest, and observing their behaviour up close was fascinating.

Cruise Tip

Ponant’s attention to guest comfort was evident throughout, including proactive support for motion sickness, which combined with the ship’s stability made the crossing far less daunting than anticipated - if concerns about the passage or motion sickness are holding you back, this is truly the ship for you!

While Antarctica is the main attraction, Le Commandant Charcot enhances the experience with its elegant and comfortable design, expansive public spaces and panoramic views from almost every angle.

Ponant’s all-inclusive offering allows guests to fully relax, with dining, beverages and daily comforts included, while spa treatments are available for those seeking additional indulgence. The ship is also equipped with a helicopter used by the expedition team to monitor ice and wildlife conditions, supporting both safety and itinerary planning.

The Polar Plunge was another memorable experience, with strong safety measures in place, including pre-cruise medical clearance. Guests could choose to jump or enter gradually, with plenty of encouragement from fellow passengers.

Dining was exceptional throughout, from casual options such as the Ponant Burger to refined dining in the Alain Ducasse restaurant, delivering high-quality cuisine in a remote setting. The onboard team were outstanding, combining professionalism with genuine warmth, and from service staff to expedition naturalists, every interaction added to the overall experience.

Facilities onboard provide the perfect balance between exploration and relaxation, with one standout moment being a spa treatment overlooking the ice, a uniquely peaceful experience.

This voyage delivered an extraordinary Antarctic journey, combining exploration with comfort, excellent service and unforgettable experiences. Antarctica is no longer a “one day” destination for me, but one I would confidently recommend to clients seeking something truly exceptional.

For clients seeking a once-in-a-lifetime expedition with the comfort of true luxury, Le Commandant Charcot delivers an Antarctic experience unlike any other.
