Toyama is surrounded by steep mountains on the coast of the Sea of Japan in central Honshu, about 200 km N of Nagoya and 300 km NW of Tokyo. During the last century heavy and chemical industries developed in Toyama, based on abundant electricity which was generated by hydro power stations in the mountains near-by. Amami Oshima is one of the small Satsunan Islands in the far south of Japan, between Kyushu and Okinawa. It is part of the Ryukyu Archipelago that lies as a chain from the main islands of Japan to Taiwan. The population of Amami Oshima is just 73,000, most of whom live in the port city of Amami.
