Ras Al Khaimah (RAK city), historically known as Julfar, is the capital of one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. (RAK emirate’s population is about 345,000.) RAK city has two main areas - the Old Town and Nakheel - on either side of a creek that is home to mangroves and is framed on the east and north by the Al Hajar mountains (“Rocky Mountains”) that extend right up to the Strait of Hormuz, the entry to the Persian Gulf.
