Life aboard Le Jacques Cartier
Le Jacques Cartier sets sail under the French flag in July 2020. Itineraries released to date include: Eight nights sailing the Baltic Sea between Stockholm and Copenhagen, east to St Petersburg; seven nights around Iceland out of Reykjavik; seven nights circling Ireland and visiting southern England and France; and later in 2020 eight nights around the Greek islands, between Malta and Rhodes. Jacques Cartier was the first European to travel inland in North America. He claimed what is now known and named by him as Canada for France (1534).

Le Jacques Cartier is the 6th in the 6-ship series commissioned for Ponant Cruises Explorer-class yachts. She joins fleet mates and sisterships Le Laperouse (2018), Le Champlain (2018), Le Bougainville (2019), Le Dumont-D'Urville (2019), and Le Bellot (2020) in mid 2020. Named after famous French explorers, these sleek five-star luxury vessels will have the finest equipment for safety and stability. The ships are designed to venture into Polar regions and remote ports that allow passage to small ships, with a shallow 4.6m draught. The ship’s cuisine will be emphatically French, offering menus in partnership with Ducasse Conseil, a company from famed chef Alain Ducasse.

Accommodation
All cabins have private balconies, air conditioning, two twins that can be pushed together to form a king-sized bed, shower, complimentary mini-bar, flat-screen TV with satellite TV and video on demand, a desk with stationery, iPod, safe, hair dryer, bathrobes and fine French bath products. Staterooms will be brand new, reflecting contemporary French design. Seventy-nine of the staterooms are for two guests, at 19 sq.m. with 4 sq.m. balcony and shower. Five De Luxe Suites for up to 3 guests are larger at 27 sq.m. Four Privilege Suites are larger again at 32 sq.m. and cater for four guests.

The largest suites, at 45 sq.m., are the three Grand De Luxe Suites and the one Owner’s Suite. All of these have 30 sq.m. balconies on deck 6 overlooking the wake of the ship. The Grand Deluxe and Privilege Suites have a bathtub instead of a shower. Note that all of the suites have a butler service. Meals come with room service to every stateroom throughout the day, and are complimentary. Many staterooms can be linked. There are two wheelchair accessible staterooms, though guests with limited mobility would do well to read up on the company’s advices and requirements.

Food and Dining
The interior dining area is located on Deck 3, and seats 70. Here you will savor French gastronomy, serving grilled meats daily, along with a variety of salads and desserts. At the aft of Deck 4 you will find a 260 sq.m. panoramic restaurant that can accommodate all 184 guests in one sitting. Designed differently to that on the other Ponant ships, this dining area, which opens to an al fresco area, will offer a buffet of salads, desserts and cheeses. The attentive crew will provide à la carte service for hot meals.

Dine-in room service is available from breakfast and throughout the day. Teas, coffees and pastries are always on hand, and all drinks are complimentary. (Top wines and spirits are pay-extra.) The stylish lounges and bars are pleasant centres to relax on a sea day. Or, swap yarns with fellow travellers. Note that dietary requests need to be submitted at the time of booking, and these will be catered for.

Entertainment
The main theatre seats 188, comes equipped with the latest sound and lighting technology, and an LED wall as the stage backdrop for the projection of high-resolution images and videos. Presentations by naturalists, lecturers, experienced guides and specialists are delivered in the large main lounge. All cabins have direct access to On-Demand Videos. There’s a unique Blue Eye underwater lounge, with three underwater cameras that project screen images, as well as two underwater portholes that let you view directly what’s there beneath the water line – porpoises, whales . . ? As you recline and view life underwater, listen also to the subaquatic sounds pickup up by aquaphone.

On expedition cruises your on-shore activities will be exceptional, as shown in all the Ponant brochure photographs. The ship provides all necessary adventure equipment, and advises you on personal health and dress requirements in preparation for the cruise. These must be attended to carefully. A hydraulic platform with adjustable height provides easier boarding than other cruise ships, easy Zodiac embarkation and disembarkation for expeditions, and simple access to the sea for swimming and practicing various water sports such as kayaking or paddle-boarding. The ship has salon facilities in association with the French beauty house SOTHYS of Paris. And the fitness rooms have panoramic ocean views while you keep in shape.
