Crystal Symphony — Ship Review Rating: 4.7 out of 5 based on 3 ratings.

Life aboard Crystal Symphony
Crystal Symphony is one of the finest luxury ships afloat. She underwent her last major refit in October 2017. Itineraries take her around the world, and cruise sectors range over 7 to 18 nights. So, find out which part of the world appeals and join her. During the first half of 2019 Crystal Symphony circles the Pacific: Pacific islands, New Zealand, Australia’s east coast, SE Asia, Japan, Alaska, to Vancouver. Sectors are around 28 nights. In mid-2019 she explores the Inside Passage of British Columbia and Alaska. Late in the year Crystal Symphony proceeds down the US west coast, crosses Panama, and heads for the Eastern Caribbean. Crystal is the World Number 2 Luxury Line (Berlitz 2018; Viking is No.1). Crystal itineraries include many ports rarely visited by other ships. Port stays are longer, departing later.

Crystal Symphony carries just 848 passengers. Every room and public area has now been redesigned This vessel receives a Berlitz rating of 4.5 stars because of its fine facilities, service and crew. Crystal ships are numbered 5 and 6 in the world’s “Top 10 Mid-size Ships”. The ship’s atmosphere creates a sense of community between passengers and crew. Dining is a superb experience, with varied themed menus at the Waterside, with its open seating. Crystal Plaza is Crystal Symphony's central, two-story atrium, with its Crystal Cove lounge for people-watching. Then there’s the library and Internet centre. Cruises that include many sea days are filled with rich entertainment and activities. The spa and beauty salon are two of the finest at sea. Guests are well-travelled, and primarily in the 50-plus range.

Accommodation
This is a luxury vessel, one of the finest in the world. All cabins have an outside view and 57% have a private balcony. Those without a balcony have a picture window viewing the ocean. The decor is more that of a boutique-hotel than luxury-cruise-ship. Cabin areas are larger than industry average and come with data socket for computer, TV, DVD player, satellite telephone, fridge, mini-bar, fine linen, bathrobes, luxury bath amenities, bathtub with integral shower, two basins, twice-daily househeeping and nightly turndown service. In-room dining is available at any time.

Seabreeze Penthouse Suites (at 46 m2) come with a separate bedroom, media room, walk-in closet and ensuite, marble bathroom and jacuzzi, shower enclosure, and bidet. The lounge has a large couch, coffee table and armchairs, and separate dining area for four. Crystal Penthouses (at 91 m2) have in addition a butler’s pantry, super electronic gadgetry, three flat-screen TVs, marble-clad bathroom with whirlpool bath, and topped with ocean views. Penthouse cabins and suites have butler service, many other niceties, and expect afternoon tea trolley service and evening hors d’œuvres. Cabins with wheelchair-access are available in all categories, and inter-connecting cabins for families.

Food and Dining
The Waterside Dining Room is elegant and spacious, with open seating. The menus are varied and the food is of the highest quality. Special (off-menu) orders can be made. Silk offers Asian fusion. Reservations are required for the two alternative restaurants. Prego specialises in Italian food and wines, and Silk Road has Japanese dishes. The Sushi Bar offers items selected by Japanese super-chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Service at all dining venues is memorable. Occasionally The Vintage Room is open for 10 guests – pay a large extra for the rarest of wines.

For breakfast and lunch head for the Marketplace on the lido deck. At night it changes to Churrascaria serving South American dishes. The Bistro is a casual spot for coffees and pastries served in the style of a European street café. The pool-side Trident Grill makes made-to-order burgers and sandwiches. Other casual buffets and eateries can be found around the ship, including an ice cream/frozen yoghurt counter. Afternoon Tea is served in Palm Court, and pre-dinner and late night hours d’oeuvres. There’s a menu for In-Room Dining. Dining anywhere on this ship is a superb experience.

Entertainment
The Galaxy Lounge is the main showroom presents elegant shows, comedy revues and classical recitals. The ship provides gentlemen hosts for the many single ladies who travel. Dancing is backed by live ensembles, and the many bars and lounges provide varied evening camaraderie: cocktails in the Palm Court or Starlite, karaoke in the Luxe nightclub, and piano music in the Avenue Saloon. For late-nighters not at the disco, look for them in the casino.

Creative Learning Institute outstanding programs range from foreign languages to computer skills. Experts speak on topics you can check on Crystal’s Web site. The ship has one full-lap pool, 20-person Jacuzzi, and popular exercise opportunities – paddle tennis, shuffleboard, electronic golf simulator, and of course state-of-the-art gym (with flat-screen TVs to occupy your gaze). The salon has a full range of services, and a spa-at-sea among the World’s Best. There are two playrooms for youngsters aged from 3 to 17. Free and unlimited Internet is available for your electronic devices.
