I recently had the opportunity to sail aboard Crystal Symphony from Manila in the Philippines to Seoul, South Korea. I was looking forward to discovering what cruising with Crystal was all about, particularly as the cruise line continues its return to the luxury cruising market under the ownership of Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group.
We arrived in Manila early so we could spend a day exploring before the cruise. Check-in was relaxed and completed within minutes, before a crew member escorted us on board. After the hustle and bustle of Manila, stepping onto Crystal Symphony felt like entering a peaceful oasis.
Inside and out, the ship feels contemporary and refreshed despite being an older vessel. Crystal has clearly invested in its public spaces and accommodation, creating an environment that feels modern, spacious and comfortable.
The ship never felt crowded. I was constantly impressed by how much space there was around the pool deck, where we loved relaxing after busy days of sightseeing. Plush loungers and sofas were plentiful and we could always find somewhere comfortable to settle in.
The library was another impressive space, with a large collection of books available to borrow. In the evenings, we particularly enjoyed the Avenue Saloon. With its low lighting and wood panelling, it has the feel of an intimate jazz club and was a wonderful place to enjoy live music and a carefully made cocktail.
Dining was something I had been especially excited to experience, with three well-known restaurant concepts on board: Umi Uma by Nobu Matsuhisa, Beefbar and Osteria d'Ovidio.
All three were excellent, but Umi Uma was our favourite. Handcrafted sushi prepared by expert chefs and the famous miso black cod were standouts.
Mornings usually began at Marketplace, Crystal's buffet restaurant, followed later in the day by a stop at The Bistro for coffee. Each evening in the main dining room we enjoyed refined three or four-course dinners, with dishes including grilled branzino, herb-crusted lamb rack and lobster. Every meal was beautifully prepared and the attentive culinary team could also assist guests with dietary or allergy requirements.
Our itinerary called at Subic Bay, Hong Kong for an overnight stay, Kaohsiung, Taipei, Ishigaki, Jeju and Yeosu before finishing in Seoul. Visiting five countries during one 12-night voyage made for an exceptionally varied journey.
Hong Kong was one of our favourite ports. Crystal Symphony docked beside the Star Ferry at Kowloon, placing us right in the heart of the city and making it easy to explore both sides of Hong Kong during our two days there.
The view from the ship was spectacular, particularly as we sailed away. Sailaway is a special tradition on Crystal, with music marking the ship's departure and creating a memorable atmosphere as each destination disappears behind you.
Crystal attracts passengers who enjoy remaining active and continuing to learn while travelling, and the onboard program reflects this. Guest lecturers join each sailing to present talks about the history, people, politics and sightseeing opportunities of the destinations being visited.
Computer University@Sea was particularly popular, with classes held in a purpose-built classroom. Sessions included practical topics such as improving travel photography on your phone, and it was worth signing up early as places filled quickly.
The dedicated cinema showed films throughout the day and evening, complete with popcorn, while bridge, mahjong and art classes were also well attended. Daily trivia became a fun way to meet other cruisers.
Although this was our first Crystal cruise, what surprised me most was how many passengers were devoted Crystal guests. Some had been sailing with the cruise line for many years and knew crew members by name.
A high percentage of Crystal's staff have also been with the line for many years, and that experience was reflected in the warm, caring and attentive service throughout the voyage. After returning from a long day of sightseeing, being greeted with a genuine “Welcome home” captured the feeling of the ship perfectly.
Solo travellers are also particularly well catered for, with host ambassadors available to join guests for dining and dancing, helping create an inclusive and sociable atmosphere.
I would highly recommend Crystal for travellers looking for a more sophisticated and intimate cruising experience. Crystal Symphony delivers luxury and comfort without feeling overly formal, supported by excellent food, engaging enrichment and service where the small details are thoughtfully taken care of.
