Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
The Baltic Sea has low salinity and a narrow exit to the North Sea. It is open for cruising between May and mid-September (being half-covered by sea ice in winter). Its history extends from Roman and Viking times to becoming the sea graveyard of WWII. The Baltic is surrounded by four Scandinavia states, three small Baltic states, Germany, Poland and Russia. We include in this region the Atlantic sub-Arctic fjord coastline of Norway, volcanic Iceland, and the Faroe Islands and sub-Arctic Greenland (both within the Kingdom of Denmark). Cities worth visiting include the Scandinavian capitals of Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm. A must-see is historic St Petersburg (Russia) with the Winter Palace and the art treasures of the Hermitage. For a scenic cruise, Prince Christian Sound in Greenland is hard to beat.
All the major cruise lines and small ships visit the Baltic and North Sea coast. Cruises sail from the UK, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Oslo and Bergen. Generally, cruises visit either the Baltic Sea states or the North Sea fjord coastline. The latter usually spend 7 nights around the sub-Arctic fjord coast of Norway. (Longer cruises reach further north to the Arctic regions of Norway and/or include Iceland.) To visit Iceland and/or Greenland, the choice is a return trip from a port in the UK or on the Continent; or, cross the North Atlantic either way between the USA and Europe. (Note: If visiting St Petersburg, look for an itinerary that gives you one or two nights’ stay to allow for worthwhile on-shore tours.)
Select the vessel that suits you - mid-size premium/luxury (Le Boreal, Nautica, Riviera, Seven Seas Navigator, Silver Explorer) or a larger ship (one of the HAL ships, Celebrity Summit, Serenade of the Seas). You will also consider which cruise offers the on-shore tours that appeal personally, and whether they are included in the fare or pay extra. Seven-night cruises don’t stay overnight at any key ports; longer cruises do. Some itineraries can be joined: a Baltic cruise with a trans-Atlantic to North America, that include Iceland and possibly Greenland. Or, join the Baltic with a UK circle.

Featured Europe - Baltic & North Atlantic Cruise Ports
St Petersburg St Petersburg is a federal city located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. In everyday speech the locals refer to it as simply Peter. It is the second largest city in Russia and is regarded as the most ‘Western’ city of Russia, as a large number of foreign consulates, international corporations, banks and other businesses are located here. They make a striking contrast with the historically older buildings, such as the Peter and Paul Fortress built in 1703. Attractions in St. Petersburg overwhelm even the most seasoned travellers. Chose a cruise ship that stays in port overnight. Cruise tours include visas. |

Copenhagen Copenhagen, situated on two islands, is the capital and largest city in Denmark. It is perhaps best known for being the final resting place of the famous author Hans Christian Andersen, and also being one of the world’s most environmentally friendly cities. It has a very high quality of life. With many colourful buildings dating back to the early 18th century, medieval cobbled streets and canals just a stone's throw away from ultra-modern waterfront architecture, and a street plan that dates back to the Middle Ages, it simply captures the imagination of all visitors. |

Stockholm The city of Stockholm in Sweden spreads across 14 islands as it faces proudly out to the Baltic Sea. Its history stretches over seven centuries, and it is Sweden's centre of art and culture. It is also famous for being the home of the Nobel Prizes. You can get to just about all of Stockholm’s many wondrous sites on foot, or you can take a boat trip that will give you a different facet of Scandinavia’s largest and undoubtedly most beautiful city. Stockholm is one of the most crowded museum-cities in the world with around 100 museums. The port is some distance from the city, but a. fast walk will take you first to the Vasa Museum, a highlight of your visit – get there early. From there walk on to the centre of the city. |
