Wallis and Futuna is an overseas community of France consisting of two small island groupings in Polynesia, near Fiji and Samoa. The village of Mata-Utu, located on Wallis Island, is the capital of the territory. Situated in the small village of Mata-Utu is the cathedral built using hand-cut blue volcanic stone with two blocklike towers overlooking the wharf. The King’s palace is beside this cathedral and opposite is the Fale Fono, the main meeting place of the island’s chiefs. Near Mata-Utu you will find the island's most important archaeological site: Talietumu, a huge lovingly refurbished structure of the once-fortified Tongan settlement, built about AD 1450.

Other important sites include: Lake Lalolalo, a most amazing crater lake, an almost perfect circle with sheer rocky cliffs that drop 30m into the 80m-deep water; Tonga Toto; Mt Puke; and the caves at Loka; all excellent places to wander through and explore. Downtown Mata-Utu is dominated by the Mata'Utu Cathedral, a French national monument, which bears a Maltese cross between its towers. Within its vicinity there are, as well as several restaurants, the Au Bon Marche and Oceania market, hotels and the post office, and the simple Palace of the King of Uvéa, which features two-storey verandas adjoining the church.

The 145m high hill, Lulu Fakahega, is accessed by a short and narrow road and the view from the top of the hill is particularly scenic. Car hire is available, but there is no public transport on the island, nor do taxis exist. If walking along the side of the road, it is highly likely locals will stop and ask if they can take you to your destination. Don't be alarmed if you are told to jump in the back of the pick-up as this type of travel is a common sight. Travellers are advised to do their currency exchanges prior to arrival.
