Union Island is part of the nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, lying 200 km WSW of Barbados and within view of the islands of Carriacou and Grenada to the south. From some views the island shows a backbone of irregular peaks (to around 300m), hence the name ‘The Tahiti of the West Indies’, especially when misty. Its population of 3000 settle in the dip between peaks, and the shores to the south, east and north. The small airstrip brings visitors, as do many sailing yachts. Its history is linked to French and English slave traders, and some remnants of plantation cotton trees are still seen around the Anchorage Yacht Club aside the small Clifton Harbour.

In the harbour you’ll see the man-made and attractive Happy Island (with a bar of course). Yachting services and chartering are mainstays, and visitors will find plenty of shops, boutiques, Internet facilities, bars and restaurants. The two towns, Clifton and Ashton, are clean and friendly. To walk the length of the island is less than a 4km stroll, and climb a little to see numerous surrounding islands set in a magnificent Caribbean seascape. There are a number of hiking trails – see the Union Tourism office in Clifton town. Climb nearby Fort Hill to take in the view, alongside an old cannon, towards Mayreau and Tobago Cays.

The Turtle Watch event is popular from March to July. Six kilometres to the NE of Union Island is the Tobago Cays National Marine Park, good for snorkelling, scuba diving and swimming with sea turtles. Established in 1997, it preserves the reefs that serve as a foraging ground and refuge for reef fish and juvenile turtles. On the lee side of the island is attractive Chatham Bay with its long white beach backed by green hills.
