Gayle was great. Gave us some excellent advice. We got a wheelchair to go onboard and a disabled room. Fantastic."

Carriacou Island is the largest island in the archipelago of St Vincent and the Grenadines. These islands form part of the Lesser Antilles, a crescent of volcanic islands separating the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. It lies 12° north of the equator and outside of the hurricane belt. Two hundred kilometres to the south of Carriacou is the coast of Venezuela. This low-set and hilly island covers only 34, has a population of around 6,000, and is bordered by natural harbours and coral reefs. Languages spoken are English and (French) Patois, both of which reflect its colonial history.

“Carriacou” is Amerindian for “land of reefs.” It is off the tourist trail, so you’ll spend your time peacefully hiking, and taking in spectacular views towards Grenada to the south and the rest of the Grenadine islands to the north. Walk the beaches or go diving, instead of frequenting casinos or five-star restaurants. The seasons are dry and wet, not too dissimilar, with rain in short bursts. The island has several natural harbors and many coral reefs and small offshore islets. The highest point on the island is High Point North at 291 m above sea level. Carriacou residents rely on rainfall for their water.

The Grenadines pick up where Grenada leaves off and stretch northwards till they hit Saint Vincent. They are a collection of 30 islands, only a dozen of which are inhabited. Most are blessed with perfect Caribbean beaches and diving waters and many of the islands can also afford great windsurfing conditions. Cruises are a great way of seeing the Grenadines and Saint Vincent. Budget travellers will choose their islands wisely, since some are geared almost exclusively to the rich and famous.
