Montevideo is the largest city, capital, and chief port of Uruguay. Situated on the River Plate (Silver River), it is also home to almost half of the nation's population, and subsequently is a modern metropolis, though with a fascinating historical old town dating back to colonial times. Described as a vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life, it is the hub of commerce. The varied architecture reflects its history that ranges from colonial to Art Deco, all influenced by either Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French or British immigrants. Certainly, the capital’s many embassies and foreign cultural centres add to the international flavour.

In Ciudad Vieja (Old Town), the heart of historic Montevideo, old buildings are being restored to make room for boldly painted cafes, hostels and galleries. The heart of the old city beats on the Plaza de la Constitucion. On one site is the Catedral with the historic Cabildo, opposite is the Museo Historico Nacional, while on the south side is a quite unusual fountain dating from 1881. Just west along the Calle Rincon is the Plaza Zabala with a monument to the founder of the city. Down by the port the Mercado del Puerto that has been modernised to accommodate a new city tourist office and the interesting Carnaval museum.

Cross the Plaza de la Independencia - the largest Plaza of the city - and here is where you enter the new city. Attractions include the mausoleum of Artigas, the Casa de Gobierno Historico, and the Palacio Salvo. The delightful white sand beaches are visited by many, as are several parks, in many of which are placed bronze statues. The most remarkable statues are found in the parks "El Prado" and "Batlle". Well worth visiting is the ‘Cerro’, a hill opposite the Old City that offers a wonderful view of the city and its surrounds.
