Unga Island is the largest of the dozen or so Shumagin Islands that lie just south of Southwest Alaska, that part of the State of Alaska that extends in an arc west to the Aleutian Islands. Unga Island was formerly named Grekodelarovskoe (‘Greek-Delarov’) for Evstratii Ivanovich Delarov who explored the area in the late 18th century on behalf of the Russian-American Company. The island is now effectively uninhabited since the population of Unga had departed by 1969 for the adjacent Popof Island and its major fishing port of Sand Point (population 1000). Unga is now a ghost town, a graveyard for its old abandoned dwellings.

These islands are notorious for the high winds caused by the meeting of cold air flows from the Bering Sea to the north, with the warm air over the Japan Current. (The Japan or Kuroshio Current is analogous to the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean.) Unga Island has low-lying undulating hills, and even Flagstaff Hill – once the site of a flagpole – has an elevation of only 24m. Flagstaff Hill is on the northern side of the entrance to the island's Delarof Bay and the erstwhile settlement of Unga. Seven kilometres to the north is Baralof Bay and the abandoned cannery of Squaw Harbor. On the west side of the island are petrified stumps of a sequoia forest formerly buried by volcanic activity.

The site is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Local birdlife included Great Horned Owls, cormorants, murres, puffins and kittiwakes. It is also the site of the Unga Gold Project, seeking to mine gold and silver. Indeed, the Apollo-Sitka mine produced roughly 150,000 oz. of gold from 1892 to 1913. To the north of Unga Island is the Aleutian Arc that incorporates 63 volcanoes, dormant and active. Interestingly, on June 17, 1778 Captain James Cook passed Unga Island in search of the Northwest Passage.
